Jay Perez, the Tejano singer, was born in San Antonio and is known as "The Voice." Originally, Jay was a drummer. Then he played for the Latin Breed and became a singer. Don Luis el Tejano was one of their most famous songs and an anthem for the Chicano civil rights movement. Jay sang for David Lee Garza y los Musicales before starting his own band. Jerry de la Rosa was Jay's keyboard player and musical director up until he was too fragile to tour with the band but continued to serve as a consultant and advisor to Jay. Up and coming Tejano Recording Artist Chente Berrera was Jay's drummer before starting his own singing career. Jay is known for occasionally doing a country or rhythm and blues song in English although his CD's remain overwhelmingly Spanish. For example Jay did a version of "Let's Get On," the Marvin Gaye hit and "Me and Mrs. Jones," Billy Paul's greatest hit. "Steel Rain" was the title cut of one of his early CD's and an original country song. Jay also recorded Billy Vera and The Beaters' "At This Moment" as a Bounus Track on his Live Album.

Tal vez es un castigo
Que dios mando
Tu eres mi destino
Dios te puso en mi camino
Por una razonn!
Ahora piensas irte
Nose por quee!!
Si alguna ves yo te e fallado
Si alguna ves te e maltradado
Perdonamee!!
Si tu te vas de aqui
Te llevas parte de mi vida
Y el corazon que tu lastimas
Ya no dejara de palpitar
Si tu te vas de aqui
Te llevas parte de mi alma
El sol no brillara manana
Sabiendo que no estas aqui
Ahora piensas irte
Dejandome muy triste
Nose por quee!!
Si alguna ves yo te e fallado
Si alguna ves te e maltradado
Perdonamee!!
Si tu te vas de aqui
Te llevas parte de mi vida
y el corazon que tu lastimas
Ya no dejara de palpitar
Si tu te vas de aqui
Te llevas parte de mi alma
El sol no brillara manana
Sabiendo que no estas aqui
The lyrics of Jay Perez's song "Si Tu Te Vas" delve into the theme of heartbreak and the pain of losing someone you love. The opening stanza reveals the confusion and guilt that the singer experiences as he tries to come to terms with the fact that the person he loves, who he believes was brought into his life for a reason, is now leaving him. He pleads with God to help him, to no avail. As the song progresses, he addresses the person directly, acknowledging that he may have made mistakes and treated them badly in the past, but he begs for forgiveness, unable to imagine life without them.
The chorus is the most poignant part of the song, with the singer expressing the depth of his pain and the emptiness left in his life now that the person he loves is gone. He says that their leaving will take a part of him with them, comparing it to the loss of his heart and soul. He implores the person to reconsider, to stay, and not leave him to suffer in their absence. The final stanza brings the song full circle, with the singer repeating the confusion of the opening lines, unable to find a reason for the person leaving, and expressing the profound sadness that overcomes him.
