Ooh
I love you so
But why I love you
I'll never know
Ooh
I love you so
But why I love you
I'll never know
Ooh
I love you so
But why I love you
I'll never know
Ooh
I love you so
But why I love you
I'll never know

Picture if you will, that the thrones burning
Romes burning and I'm sitting in the corner all alone burning
Why does it always end up like this?
Something that we don't determine
Same people that I fought for
That I fight for, that I ride for
That I live for, that I die for
Be the reason that these niggas is alive for
And they want me dead
But I'm sorry but I just can't die for you
But I can make 'em put their hands in the sky for you
We waiting for the fireworks like July fourth
Get fly more, get high more, cry boy, why for?
When the grief is over, beef is over,
I'll be fly when Easter's over
I tried to teach niggas how to be kings
And all they ever wanted to be was soldiers
So the love is gone, 'til blood is drawn
So we no longer wear the same uniform
Fuck you squares, the circle got smaller
The castle got bigger, the walls got taller
And truth be told after all that said
Niggas still got love for you

Ooh
I love you so
But why I love you
I'll never know
Ooh
I love you so
But why I love you
I'll never know
Ooh
I love you so
But why I love you
I'll never know
Ooh
I love you so
But why I love you
I'll never know

Showed love to you niggas
You ripped out my heart and you stepped on it
I picked up the pieces, before you swept on it
God damn this shit leaves a mess don't it
Shit feelin' like death don't it
Charge it to the game, whatever's left on it
I spent about a minute, maybe less on it
Fly pelican fly, turn the jets on it
But first I shall digress on it
Wasn't I a good king?
(Maybe too much of a good thing, huh?)
Didn't I spoil you?, Me or the money, what you loyal to?
(Huh, I gave you my loyalty)
Made you Royalty and royalties
(Took care of these niggas lawyer fees)
And this is how niggas rewardin' me
(Damn)

Ooh
I love you so
But why I love you
I'll never know
Ooh
I love you so
But why I love you
I'll never know

Bussin' at me, b-b-b-bussin' at me
But I'm bullet proof, bitch you can't get nothin' past me
Got body armor (A nigga gotta watch the throne)
And I'm bussin' back, so niggas in a glass house should not throw stones
What do you do when the love turns the hate?
(Gotta separate from these fuckin' fakes)
Caesar didn't see it so he ceased to assist
So the nigga that killed him had keys to his shit
Am I my brother's keeper?
(Only if that nigga don't creep up)
Got a pistol under my pillow
(I've never been a deep sleeper)
P-p-p-paranoia
(Cause the nigga that said he'll)
Blast for ya (Is now)
Blastin' for ya, that's an assassin for ya
(These niggas got a shot they'll shoot)
Please lord (Forgive him)

For these niggas (Not know)
What they, (Do) (Ooh)

Overall Meaning

"Why I Love You" by Jay Z/Kanye West explores the confusing nature of love and loyalty. Though the lyrics are primary from the view of the rapper, the first verse can be interpreted as a conversation between two lovers. The singer expresses their love, but confesses that they don't know why they love their partner. The chorus repeats these sentiments, cementing the confusion and uncertainty within the relationship.

The second verse begins with the singer sitting alone while Rome burns around them. This establishes a sense of isolation and despair that permeates the rest of the verse. Within this context, the singer questions why they continue to fight for people who want them dead. This leads to the realization that they had tried to teach others to be kings, but all they wanted was to be soldiers. This betrayal leads the singer to draw a line with these people- even though they still have love for them, they can no longer fight alongside them.

The third and final verse is a depiction of violence, and serves as the climax of the song. Another person shoots at the singer, but they are bulletproof. This leads to the singer shooting back, and questioning what happens when love turns into hate. They also ponder if they are responsible for their brother's actions and acknowledge the sense of paranoia that naturally comes with such violence.

@20cs65

this is one of my favourite kanye songs but ive never seen anyone talk about it. one of ye’s most underrated songs

@CYNICHVC

This is Jays song?

@20cs65

@@CYNICHVC it’s a song from kanye and jay z’s collab album

@CYNICHVC

@@20cs65 I’m aware of that but this is Jay’s solo song on the album. Kanye has about 4 lines on it speaking as Jay’s mind. Jay wrote this song to reply to everyone who did him wrong, during the course of his career. Hence the 2. lines 1. “fuck you squares, the circle got smaller, the castle got bigger the walls got taller and soon be told after all that said, n*gas still got love for ya” and 2. “I tried to teach n*gas how to be kings, and all they ever wanted to be was soldiers”

That’s why I’m confused on why you said this is one of your favourite Kanye songs because this is just a Jay song apart from the production and couple lines.

@davejacobs2863

@@CYNICHVC The production is just so Kanye that’s probably why he thought that. Especially cause the chorus is the main thing that jumps out at you about this song.

@CYNICHVC

@@davejacobs2863 I guess so but it’s like saying Lift Off is your favourite Jay song. Jay only has 4 lines on it.
