Formed in 1965, the group defined the San Francisco Sound and was the first from the Bay Area to achieve international commercial success. They were headliners at the three most famous American rock festivals of the 1960s—Monterey (1967), Woodstock (1969) and Altamont (1969)—and the first Isle of Wight Festival (1968) in England. Their 1967 break-out album Surrealistic Pillow ranks on the short list of the most significant recordings of the "Summer of Love". Two songs from that album, "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit", are among Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time."

The "classic" lineup of Jefferson Airplane, from October 1966 to February 1970, was Marty Balin (vocals), Paul Kantner (guitar, vocals), Grace Slick (vocals), Jorma Kaukonen (lead guitar, vocals), Jack Casady (bass), and Spencer Dryden (drums). Marty Balin left the band in 1971. After 1972, Jefferson Airplane effectively split into two groups. Kaukonen and Casady moved on full time to their own band, Hot Tuna. Slick, Kantner, and the remaining members of Jefferson Airplane recruited new members and regrouped as Jefferson Starship in 1974, with Marty Balin eventually joining them. Jefferson Airplane was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 and was presented with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016.

Spencer Dryden died on January 11, 2005.

Both Signe Anderson and Paul Kantner died on January 28, 2016.

Marty Balin died on September 27, 2018

Marty could really sing the Blues. Did he ever record any other Blues songs? ("Blues from an Airplane" is more of an 'acid blues', not traditional.) He really should have.

Jenny Graham......I will tell you I'm only 48 yrs old......lol......but ever since covid I've been listening to alot of "different" classic rock and just stated to listen to Jefferson Airplane's music depth and it's AMAZING!!!!.....and I believe Marty Balin is one of the truly underappreciated singing voices of the 60's I'm also not sure myself of other types of blues songs he has done over the years I haven't found any of note

Actually, depending on which version of the LP you have it could be either track 11 or 12. For version 2 they dropped 'Runnin Round This World". Version 3 has the revised lyrics on 'Let Me In' and 'Run Around'.

If most of you that came here and posted your like me in your 60s now ! I only have one question to ask all you beautiful people of the 60s and 70s and that is, where did it all go ! The yrs flew by so fast it's such a quick journey life that is ! It seems so unfair because it's over before you know it !

I lived in the tenderloin till my son was born and then i thought it wasn't really the neighborhood I wanted him to grow up in.....so we moved out to 19th avenue near lake merced & city college! Your comment really made me LOL.....:)

Next time you go to Hollywood, stop by the old Army Navy store on Hollywood Blvd. When you walk in, walk towards the wall to the left. Look on the floor... You'll see a slab of cement that the Clash inscribed on. I am pretty sure it's from their Combat Rock tour era!! Have fun, amigo!
