Buildings
Jenny Omnichord Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In five minutes, or maybe two
There'd be one thing to do
He'd be waiting on the line
Or else walk with her if he had the time

She got out her purse and took out her phone
And called him up early to see if he was home
But there's nobody here this time
It said, how could she be sure
That he didn't forget
Because the buildings are too tall
But it split across the middle
Then there's no building at all

She couldn't see a place
Where a walk would make a difference
There's only so much that i can take
When you start talking business

Why don't we let it all fall down today
And then see if we miss it
Why don't we let it all fall down today
And then see if we miss it

She brushed her bangs from off her face
Closed her eyes and sighed a lot
Put the chair in its place
Once again, he had forgot

She put the candle back in its drawer
The one she'd used some other time
And she waited for the sad to fade
And something else to fill her mind

Because the buildings are too tall
But they split across the middle
And there's no building at all

No building at all

No building at all
No building at all

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Jenny Omnichord's "Buildings" tells a story of a woman who tried to reach out to someone through a phone call, but there was no answer. The first stanza talks about the woman's attempt to call the person she was trying to reach. She takes out her phone from her purse and calls the person up, hoping to get a response. However, she was uncertain whether he didn't answer because he forgot or because the buildings were too tall and he couldn't hear the phone ringing. The buildings being too tall also symbolize the distance between the two people trying to connect.

In the second stanza, the woman struggles to find a reason to continue waiting. She feels like there's only so much that she can take when the other person only talks business. She suggests that they let everything fall down to see if they would miss it. This idea symbolizes the woman's frustration with the lack of communication and her willingness to let go.

The third stanza is about the woman's disappointment that the person has forgotten. She brushes her bangs from her face and puts the chair in its place, symbolizing her attempt to keep things in order. She puts the candle back in its drawer and waits for her sadness to fade and something else to fill her mind. The song ends with the repetition of the phrase "no building at all" symbolizing the distance between the two people who can't seem to connect.
