Someone Else
Jens Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Jennifer called, told me about her latest admirer
I said, "Someone should make a pamphlet called
'So You Think You're in Love with Jennifer?'"
They're all guys with steady girlfriends
Panicing at where they're at.
Jenny, please, let's never become like that

Become like that, become like that
Become like that, become like that

Like a sinking rock tied to the leg of a person
I'd rather be a flat stone skipping across the ocean
When the Melbourne summer is endless
And the warm wind leaves you helpless
Life's too good to become someone else's

Become someone else's, become someone else's
Become someone else's, become someone

Else than this hopeless young fool
What Tracey sang about me is true
It all depends what lens you're looking through, maybe
But all I know about love, I learned from you, Tracey

Bats are sucking on cherries, dangling from the trees
Hasn't anyone told you what your fangs are for, little buddies?
That lonesome feeling, and what it tells us
Sleeping on my arm till it becomes someone else's
Sleeping on my arm till it becomes someone else's

Becomes someone else's, becomes someone else's

Becomes someone else's, becomes someone else's
Becomes someone else's, becomes someone else's

Overall Meaning

In "Become Someone Else" by Jens Lekman, the singer Jennifer informs him about her latest admirer, who is one of many guys in relationships who seem to be questioning their commitment. The singer imagines a brochure called "So You Think You're in Love with Jennifer?" for these guys, suggesting that they are panicking about where they are in their relationships. The singer pleads with Jennifer, asking her to not let them become like that. He then repeats "Become like that" over and over, as if warning himself and others not to become just another confused guy in a relationship.

The singer then shifts focus to himself, stating that he would rather be a flat stone skipping across the ocean than a sinking rock tied to someone else's leg. He implies that love can make you feel helpless and vulnerable, especially during a Melbourne summer. He insists that life is too good to become someone else's, and repeats "Become someone else's" over and over, perhaps to reaffirm his commitment to himself and his own happiness.

"The bats are sucking on cherries dangling from the trees
Hasn't anyone told you what your fangs are for, little buddies
That lonesome feeling
And what it tells us
Sleeping on my arm 'til it becomes someone else's"

and a quick note: this may not be my favorite jens song (but like, is that important? i always trouble myself with rankings and stuff, first world problems right? let's stay on the course here) - but that 2:02 part always makes me fall in love. so sweet and tender, human before anything, the music that really had the most impact on how i see the world, people, my own selfish ego sometimes, love, relationships, beauty and lust for life (im sounding cheesy) that can be found in vulnerability and sadness - jens lekman's music is on that list for sure (HERE I AM AGAIN WITH RANKINGS)

I love his lyrical response to Tracey Thorn's song "Oh Jens, Oh Jens Your songs seem to look through a different lens You're still so young Love ends just as easy as it's begun".

Goshhh has it really been more than a decade ago? 😭😭😭😭 I remember this song playing endless on my phone after I woke up in the morning, while preparing a mental battle with a job that I abhorred but well paid 😂😂

Being a diehard fan of Morrissey's, I think it pays true homage to Jens' song writing ability if by listening to his lyrics you are reminded of Manchester's finest.
