I am 70. I was 9 years old when this song came out in 1959. I had an older sister who collected records. The last day of school I would come home and play this song over and over. I remember this like it was yesterday.

Gee, I graduated in 1959 too. Went to the university in the fall. Didn't have a girl until the summer of 1960. My car was sorry until 1963, unless you count the 1955 Pontiac.

Song is great but modern 2 stroke power diesel is much more torque than any 50's pos car anyday, just look at the military 6v53 2 stroke detroit at over 400hp and 700 ft lbs of torque. not one 50's hot rod compares to a modern diesel!, Most cummins, duramax and powerstroke will destroy anything from the 50's anyday with power and torque period!

It's the first day of summer 2021 and this song started playing in my mind so I came here to find it! I was only 7 when it came out but I must have heard it on the radio cause I think of it each summer. When I hear it now and reflect on the melody and lyrics I AGAIN understand how truly fortunate I was to grow up then. I expect we tend to make the past better as we grow older- but dear God, compared with today, it really WAS a truer, simpler, stronger, kinder and more decent time.

I always loved this song when I was a boy. I had a newspaper route, a dog and played on a baseball team called the Jets. Life was good. No girls to disturb my mood (they all had cooties), no creepy teachers telling us to tuck our shirts in and fully able to walk barefoot all summer long (except during baseball games). Now look at us! We're having even more fun now because our imaginations allow us to revisit happier times with songs like this which reminds us how happy we were as kids and now we have to listen to rap music. We can still pretend that we are living in a happier time until the shock wave of the nuclear blasts finally reaches us......William Blake reminds us too that there is nothing but man in the universe and man is nothing but the wildest flights of his imagination. So if we actually dream about being the president of the United States when we go to bed at night and wake up as a giant cockroach we'll know something bad happened and it doesn't work.........still, summer is coming and it reminds me that I was happy then.

I was 16 in England and just finished all those exams and left school. And yes there was a girl! ♥️ 3 months later in October I got a job. But this WAS Summer and full of the best music both sides of the Atlantic! Now 76 and have no chance of understanding this crazy world! Thank God I grew up at that time!😀 bring on this timeless music!🎸

Jerome - have you got your sums right you'd only be about 12 when this was at the top In 1959? Or perhaps you didn't hear it until years later. I noticed this because I'm 74 and remembered it from when I was 15. Strange thing but about 10 minutes ago I started playing and singing it then came to YouTube to refresh my memory. I could remember every word - but can't remember too much about last week.☺☺

These songs remind me of Saturday Morning Kids cinema in the late fifties/early sixties(UK). I used to go every Saturday. They'd play these songs in the interval. Funny how some stick in your mind. Like Petula Clarke's "Sailor" and "Romeo" as well. I was born in 1952, where do the years go?. Nice to have these memories.

Today is the first day of summer and I would like to honor it with a song that I ABSOLUTELY LOVED as a 13 year old boy graduating from the eighth grade. This one like many others has special memories. I thought about this song today, I have the 45 and this one brings me right back to the summertime of 1959. It was a big hit and lasted a number of weeks on the charts and on the radio here in New York.

A top hit in 1958, it conjures up images of American Graffiti - fast cars, drive-ins, malt shops, chicks in convertibles. It was the tail end of the so-called innocent days of the Eisenhower 1950s, when life seemed simpler, at least compared with today. Oh, to be young in that summer of '58, cruzin' along in your Chevy Bel Air, your steady by your side, and "Here Comes Summer" blasting from your top-40 radio station. Did it get any better than that? One of my favorite summer songs, up there with Mungo Jerry's "In The Summertime." Of course, by 1970, the year of its release, so much had changed and not all for the better.
