It's spooky and all but you do wonder why, in this world, NASA decided to just go ahead with a Mars mission knowing that the Martians are evil and warlike. Surely humanity would have armed themselves against such an eventuality by now...?!

@@agathahenney358 Seeing as how this comes from NASA in the 2000s and that humanity is now sending stuff to Mars, it's likely they thought the Martians died off or that they were currently in the beginning of a second invasion already taking place outside the US while NASA was cut off.
They'd best hope they have a better plan as modern human technology is far more capable of combating them than artillery guns once before.
