In going solo, Ryan Adams, an old friend, was impressed by Malin's songs and offered to produce a record for him, in spite of having never done it before. Malin's debut, "The Fine Art of Self Destruction," was made in just under a week, and was released in January, 2003. He toured both the US and the UK in support of the album.
Malin's follow-up, "The Heat," was released in June, 2004. He released his third solo album, "Glitter in the Gutter," in March, 2007.
In 2010, Malin formed a band called Jesse Malin & the St. Mark's Social and released an album called Love It To Life; the title comes from a quote by Joe Strummer (the title was previously used on a 2007 UK release of live material on the One Little Indian label.) Featuring a more rockier approach, the album's first single was "Burning The Bowery" and next single was "All The Way From Moscow." Love It To Life was referred to as "the best album of his career" by Paste Magazine.
In December 2010, Malin, along members of Green Day, formed the band 'Rodeo Queens'. They released one song, along with a video, called 'Depression Times'. D Generation reunited in 2011 and continue to play live.
In 2019, Jesse Malin released the critically acclaimed album "Sunset Kids," in collaboration with American roots icon Lucinda Williams and Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day.
Hungry Heart

I went out for a ride and I never went back
Like a river that don't know where it's flowing
I took a wrong turn and I just kept going
Everybody's got a hungry heart
Everybody's got a hungry heart
Lay down your money and you play your part
I met her in a Kingstown bar
We fell in love I knew it had to end
We took what we had and we ripped it apart
Now here I am down in Kingstown again
Everybody's got a hungry heart
Everybody's got a hungry heart
Lay down your money and you play your part
Everybody's got a hungry heart
Everybody needs a place to rest
Everybody wants to have a home
Don't make no difference what nobody says
Ain't nobody like to be alone
Everybody's got a hungry heart
Everybody's got a hungry heart
Lay down your money and you play your part
Everybody's got a hungry heart
The lyrics of Jesse Malin's cover of Bruce Springsteen's Hungry Heart portrays the experience of a man who got caught up in his desire for something different and exciting, that he ended up abandoning his family in pursuit of his own personal satisfaction. The opening lines reveal that he left his family without any notice or explanation, almost as if he was a body of water that lost direction and control, and so he kept going in one direction. The line "Like a river that don't know where it's flowing" makes metaphorical sense as it suggests that the man was engulfed in the lust of the moment and lacked self-control.
The chorus that says "Everybody got a hungry heart, Lay down your money and you play your part" emphasizes that the desire for the pleasures of life is universal - everyone has their desires, dreams, and urges that they hunger after. The verse "We took what we had and we ripped it apart, Now here I am down in Kingstown again" could be interpreted as the singer reuniting with a former lover from Kingstown after their previous affair ended in ruin. The melancholic tone of the song suggests that despite all the temporary pleasures and momentary lust, home is always the best place to be.
Overall, Jesse Malin's cover of Hungry Heart by Bruce Springsteen is a poignant reflection on human desires and the struggle to balance those desires with the desire for love and connection.
