Helplessly Hopelessly
Jessica Andrews Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I can stand with the weight of the world on my shoulders
I can fight with the toughest of the tough
I can laugh in the face of all my insecurities
Anytime, anywhere, anything, I'm strong enough

But when you're holding me like this
I'm carelessly lost in your touch
I'm completely defenseless, baby, it's almost too much
I'm helplessly, hopelessly, breathlessly falling in love

So let consequence do what it will to us, I don't care
Let the stars stand as witness to it all
Say the word and tonight I will follow you anywhere
I just can't pretend anymore, I'm too sturdy to fall

'Cause when you're holding me like this
I'm carelessly lost in your touch
I'm completely defenseless, baby, it's almost too much
I'm helplessly, hopelessly, breathlessly falling in love

I am not afraid
I am not afraid

'Cause when you're holding me like this
I'm carelessly lost in your touch
I'm completely defenseless, baby, it's almost too much
I'm helplessly, hopelessly, breathlessly falling

Helplessly, hopelessly, breathlessly
I'm helplessly, hopelessly, breathlessly falling in love

Overall Meaning

In "Helplessly Hopelessly," Jessica Andrews expresses her strength and independence, but also the feeling of vulnerability and uncontrollable love when experiencing physical and emotional intimacy with someone special. Throughout the song, she speaks about how she is strong enough to handle anything and can fight against any insecurities thrown her way. However, when the person she loves holds her, she becomes completely defenseless and is not able to control her feelings. This is conveyed through the repetition of the refrain, "When you're holding me like this, I'm carelessly lost in your touch. I'm completely defenseless, baby, it's almost too much. I'm helplessly, hopelessly, breathlessly falling in love."

Although the song talks about being defenseless and vulnerable, it's ultimately a positive and empowering message. Rather than being afraid of her vulnerability, Andrews embraces it and chooses to take a chance on love. The chorus of the song speaks to this sentiment, "So let consequence do what it will to us, I don't care. Let the stars stand as witness to it all. Say the word and tonight, I will follow you anywhere. I just can't pretend anymore, I'm too sturdy to fall." Andrews acknowledges that love is risky, but she’s confident enough in herself to fully give in and take that risk.

Overall, "Helplessly Hopelessly" is a song about the balance between strength and vulnerability, and finding the courage to let go and fall in love.

She can sing, is so beautiful, and is helplessly, hopelessly underated.

I don't understand why she didn't become a bigger star. She's got the voice of an Angel, and can masterfully piece together a gorgeous song. 😊

I think it was just bad timing. Pop Country music just wasn’t that popular at the time. The late 90s early 2000s was all about pop, r&b, and hip hop music. Pop country music didn’t really become popular until after her time.

And even if she did a total pop crossover like Taylor Swift and Katy Perry did in the late 2000s, there was so much competition because the music scene was over saturated with pop stars and Britney Spears prototypes.

Maybe if her music had come out in 2008 or even 2006 she would’ve been more successful.

Nathan Barger

Unfortunately her record label went bankrupt after her last album in 2003. Unfortunately a lot of singers around the same time as Jessica are no longer in the country music business anymore.

Letting Go

@Nathan Barger Yup, and then she signed to another record label and recorded an entire new album, released the single "Everything" in 2008 and then that label shut down before she could even film the music video and the album shelved. I think that made her give up with music too. Two label closings, and two shelved albums. That would suck.

I used to listen to this song when I was a kid not understanding anything at all but just enjoying how beautiful the melody is, and now re-listening to it and understanding completely the lyrics, it's just, I don't know, this song is incredible.
