To Love Somebody
Jessica Jay Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We are wicked men
Looking for a proper solution
By the count of ten
I want to see somebody human
And I lost what it was in the teenage dust of the downtown Romeos
In a couple of weeks you can tell all the freaks how you carried my body home
But tonight
I cross the line
Dear Mr Lonely how much could you know me
I could find lessons in life
But once you′ve earned it you've already burned it
I don′t want to see you go
I need somebody to love me
Why'd it take so long to know
I need somebody to love me
I want somebody to be nice
To see the boy I once was in my eyes
Nobody's gonna save my life
Got my ticket, man, and I′m looking for somebody to use it
I know we pretend, but one of these days were gonna lose it
And I once left town when the leaves turned brown with a couple of souvenirs
She was in my car when we hit that wall
Yeah it coulda moved me to tears
But tonight I crossed the line
I used to know her when my house was sober
I could find lessons in life
Over and over, is it really over
I don′t want to see you go
I want somebody to love me
Why'd it take so long to know
I need somebody to love me
I want somebody to be nice
To see the boy I once was in my eyes
Nobody′s gonna save my life
But tonight I crossed the line
I used to know her when my house was sober

I could find lessons in life
Over and over, is it really over

Overall Meaning

In the song "To Love Somebody" by Jessica Jay, the lyrics depict a story of a man who is searching for someone to love and care for him. The opening lines state "we are wicked men, looking for a proper solution, by the count of ten, I want to see somebody human." This indicates that the singer is lost and possibly dealing with some kind of inner turmoil.

The next few lines describe his past experiences, where he lost what he had in the teenage dust of downtown Romeos. He had a fleeting relationship with someone who boasted about carrying his body home from a wild night out. However, things have changed since then, and he has crossed the line into loneliness, needing someone who can love him. He talks to "Mr. Lonely" and wonders if they could ever truly know him, as he has already burned the lessons life has taught him.

The lyrics suggest that the man is looking for another chance at love and does not want to see the person he loves leave. He wants someone to see the boy he once was in his eyes and be nice to him. He knows that nobody can save him, but he has his ticket and is ready to use it; perhaps he is ready for a new adventure. The final lines of the song repeat the idea of crossing the line and how he used to know the woman in the past. However, he is unsure if things are really over.
