Imagine It Was Us
Jessie Ware Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I should know better than to wait for you
If I leave, well it's no better, so I'll wait for you
I don't know if this is wrong, but it's crept into my mind
I don't know if this is love, but I think it's worth a try

Could it be a deep fantasy?
Could it be a secret to keep?
Are you waiting for something? (Imagine it was us)
Tell me, would you wait all night?
Are you thinking about it like I do, I do?
I would wait all night
(I would wait all night)
(I would wait all night)

There must be a reason why it has to be you
You and me, we need to make it, so it's just us two
I don't know if this is wrong, but it's crept into my mind
I don't know if this is love, but I think it's worth a try

Could it be a deep fantasy?
Could it be a secret to keep?

Are you waiting for something?
Tell me, would you wait all night?
Are you thinking about it like I do, I do?
I would wait all night

Are you waiting for something? (Imagine it was us)
Tell me, would you wait all night?
Are you thinking about it like I do, I do?
I would wait all night

If it takes all night
If it takes all night

If it takes all night for me
If it takes all night for me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Jessie Ware's 'Imagine It Was Us' are about a person's intense infatuation and desire for another individual. The lyrics convey the singer's investment in this person, being unsure exactly what they are feeling but convinced that this person is worth waiting for. The opening lines, "I should know better than to wait for you / If I leave, well it's no better, so I'll wait for you" convey a sense of surrender to the power that the other person holds over the singer, aware that leaving isn't an option because they cannot bear to be without this person. It is unclear if the singer thinks of this relationship as love or merely a deep fantasy, suggesting that the emotions they feel could be mere infatuation, but they are willing to try anyways.

The chorus, specifically the lines "Are you waiting for something? / Tell me, would you wait all night?" suggest that the singer wants the other person to be as invested as they are. They want time with this person, to wait for them until they're available, and they want to make sure that their investment is not one-sided. Likewise, the line "There must be a reason why it has to be you" suggests that the singer views their relationship with this person as destiny or fate, believing that they are meant to be together. The last few lines "If it takes all night / If it takes all night / If it takes all night for me / If it takes all night for me" drive home the idea that the singer is willing to wait for this person as long as necessary, that they are invested in this person and their shared future.

She was so ahead of her time with this single. If this was realised now with the 80s vibes floating about in the charts, this would have been huge. Love Jessie but she is so underrated.

@BaruBaroAv

absolutely underrated! seven years ago when I listened this song I smelt this would be her way. Now she has given us such a precious album!

@GovernmentHooker0012

the 80’s vibes are floating around every five years, it’s not ahead of time, ifs tiresome and just shows how stagnant pop culture has become. it’s a good song but nothing special and def not ahead of it’s time

@jrochanetto

@anarchy orchid Yes, but I must add that this is not "80's vibe" at all. This sounds like good modern house music. I absolutely love Jessie and this song, but there is no such "80's vibe" in it. If anything, we could compare this to some 90's vibe like Ce Ce Peniston.
