Together they began working on four-track recordings aided by drum machines until they asked Chris Daly, previously the drummer for Texas Is the Reason, to join them. Daly created the name "Jets to Brazil" (perhaps taken from a poster seen in the film Breakfast at Tiffany's), and the band joined Jade Tree Records in 1997.
It was under Jade Tree that they recorded their first (and, following the successes of their previous bands, highly anticipated) album, Orange Rhyming Dictionary. Following its eventual success they went on to release Four Cornered Night, which introduced the fourth member of the band: former Van Pelt guitarist, Brian Maryansky. In 2002, Jets to Brazil launched their third — and what was to be final — album, Perfecting Loneliness. By 2003 the band had broken up, for unspecified reasons.
You're Having The Time Of My Life
Jets to Brazil Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
how closed your eyes will be
narrowing me to three short feet
across a room of drunken revelry
you're having the time of my life
and i love you much too late
there are things id like
when you say my name to me
like some amusing piece of food between your teeth
then i will know that its completely over
won't you say my name to me
you're having the time of my life
and i think you got it right
its an envy making green
says your eyes only see me
if i had another last chance
and we met again for the first time
i would listen to your heart
i would start back at the start
there are things id like to say
so many things id like to change
The lyrics of this song paint a picture of an out-of-place individual in a room full of party-goers, feeling disconnected and alone. The singer speaks to a former lover, addressing the sadness that comes with watching them move on and enjoy themselves without them. The first stanza describes the singer's feelings of isolation and helplessness as they watch their ex-partner from across the room. The lines "how closed your eyes will be/narrowing me to three short feet/across a room of drunken revelry" paint an image of the singer feeling tiny and insignificant amidst the party atmosphere.
In the chorus, the singer laments watching their former lover enjoy life without them, saying "you're having the time of my life/and I love you much too late." The repeated use of "my life" suggests that the singer feels as though their life is tied to their ex-partner's happiness. The bridge of the song is a plea for the ex-lover to acknowledge the singer's existence, to "say my name" to them. This request shows the singer's continued attachment to the person they're addressing, despite being aware that they've moved on.
The final lyrics of the song suggest that the singer would go back in time if they could, to make different decisions and perhaps change the outcome of the relationship. The line "if I had another last chance/and we met again for the first time" shows a desire for a do-over, to go back in time before the hurt feelings and missed opportunities set in.
