In The Garden
Jim Reeves Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I come to the garden alone
While the dew is still on the roses
And the voice I hear, falling on my ear
The Son of God discloses

And He walks with me
And He talks with me
And He tells me I am His own
And the joy we share as we tarry there
None other has ever known

(He speaks and the sound of His voice)
(Is so sweet the birds hush their singing)
And the melody that He gave to me
Within my heart is ringing

And He walks with me
And He talks with me
And He tells me I am His own

And the joy we share as we tarry there
None other has ever known

Overall Meaning

Jim Reeves's "In the Garden" is a beautiful yet simple song that portrays a spiritual experience of being alone with Jesus in a garden. The lyrics outline a personal experience of the singer who went alone to the garden with a slight morning dew that only magnified the beauty of roses. There, he hears a voice that belongs to the Son of God who reveals Himself in a unique way to every individul. The tune describes a close encounter of walking and talking with God and the joyous unquantifiable relationship between man and God.

In the second stanza, the song highlights the uniqueness of the experience of walking and talking with God. The singer expresses that the sound of the Lord's voice is so sweet that it hushes the singing of birds. The melody of God's voice is so captivating that it remains within the singer's heart as he leaves the garden. The chorus repeats with greater emphasis that the joy shared between the singer and the Lord is unsurpassable, with no comparable experience of intimacy with anyone else.

In summary, "In the Garden" is a moving song that portrays the beauty and peace associated with spending time outdoors in solitude with the chief Shepherd, Jesus Christ.

Katherine Handley

He is. Another good one, and on the line of Jim Reeves, to me, at least, is Jim Ed Brown.

I love Jim Reeves, but I think he’d tell you to also listen to Elvis’ version. Elvis’ favourite genre was gospel, and you can hear it in the tenderness of his voice. It’s one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever heard.

Jennifer Smith

Beautiful voice! Love his version of this hymn. So many wonderful songs performed by this artist.

Philomena Peterson
