Why Do I Love You
Jim Reeves Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Why do I love you I love you not only for what you are
But for what I am when I'm with you
I love you not only for what you've made of yourself
But for what you're making of me
I love you for ignoring the possibilities of the fool in me
And for laying firm hold of the possibilities for good in me
Why do I love you I love you for closing your eyes to the dischords
And for adding to the music in me by worshipful listening
I love you because you're helping to make of the lumber of my life
Not a tavern but a temple
And out of the words of my everyday not a reproach but a song
I love you because you have done more than any creed to make me happy

You have done it without a word without a touch without a sign
You have done it just by being yourself and after all perhaps that's what love means

Overall Meaning

The song 'Why Do I Love You' by Jim Reeves is a declaration of love that goes beyond the physical and surface-level attributes of the loved one. The lyrics portray a deep appreciation for the influence and impact the person has on the singer's life. The lines "I love you not only for what you are/But for what I am when I'm with you" suggest that the person brings out the best in the singer and makes them a better version of themselves. The singer also acknowledges that the person has helped them see the good within themselves, even when they were prone to making foolish choices.

The next verse describes how the person's presence in the singer's life has transformed their outlook and worldview. The person has elevated the singer's life from resembling that of a "tavern" to that of a "temple." Here, the tavern implies a life of drunkenness, which the person has saved the singer from. Similarly, the line "out of the words of my everyday not a reproach but a song" portrays how the person has softened the singer's approach to life, replacing negativity with positivity. The final lines suggest that despite the lack of overt gestures or displays of affection, the person's mere existence is enough to make the singer feel loved and happy.

Overall, the lyrics of the song convey the idea that true love goes beyond physical attraction, but rather encompasses a deep appreciation and admiration for the qualities that make the person special. The love described in the song is grounded in selflessness, and revolves around the idea that the loved one makes the singer a better, happier person.

My husband died on Dec. 25, 2011 and he was an ardent Jim Reeves fan. I had them play this song at his funeral - it was one of his favorites. We were fortunate enough to have 46 years, 1 month, and 4 days together. Jim Reeves was a favorite of both of us, and they don't have singers like him anymore.
