Jimmie Dale Gilmore Lyrics

The way that she kisses you now
And you know the way she touches your cheek
Well I taught her how
I was the one who taught her to cry
When she wants you under her spell
The sight of her tear drives you out of your mindI taught her so well
And then one day I had my love
As perfect as could be
She lived, she loved, she laughed, she cried
And it was all for me
Oh, I'll never know who taught her to lie
And now that it's over and done
Who learned the lesson when she broke my heart
I was the one
And then one day I had my love
As perfect as could be
She lived, she loved, she laughed, she cried
And it was all for me
Oh, I'll never know who taught her to lie
And now that it's over and done
Who learned the lesson when she broke my heart
I was the one
The lyrics to Jimmie Dale Gilmore's song "I Was the One" tell a story about a man who reflects upon the past and regrets that he had taught his lover how to love, cry, and even lie to him. He laments that he had created the perfect lover, who had all the best qualities, and yet still his heart was broken. He recognizes that even though he had taught her everything, someone else had taught her to lie, and he does not know how or why she betrayed him.
The song is full of emotion and heartache. The lyrics reflect the theme of regret and the pain of lost love. The singer's voice has a wistful and melancholy tone that adds to the emotional depth of the song.
Overall, the message conveyed by the song is that love is complicated, and sometimes it can lead to heartbreak. The singer acknowledges his own contribution to the relationship's failure and accepts that he was the one responsible for the outcome. The song ends on a sad note, leaving the listener with a sense of melancholy and a longing for what once was.

Simple does not necessarily imply unsophisticated. Simple is usually harder.

Jimmie and this song were a big influence on me years ago. I also grew up in West Texas / Eastern New Mexico. When the album Spinning Around the Sun came out, I heard an interview with Jimmie explaining the lyrics of this song, comparing it with Buddhism, and discussing life in general. That interview and his music opened a lot of doors for me, mentally and spiritually.
