M
Jimmie Rodgers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm lonely and blue, I'm down hearted too
Nobody but you can cheer me
You left me alone, you wandered from home
Oh, why do you roam, my dearie?

You promised you'd be just mine, sweetheart
That you and I would never part
You've broken your vow and left me but now
I'll pray that somehow you'll return, sweetheart

If you only knew, my longing for you
That I am still true to you, dear
Perhaps you would say, "I'm sorry", someday
"That I went away from you, dear"

You promised you'd be just mine, sweetheart
That you and I would never part

You've broken your vow and left me but now
I'll pray that somehow you'll return, sweetheart

Overall Meaning

In Jimmie Rodgers's "I'm Lonely and Blue," the singer is experiencing feelings of isolation and heartbreak due to the absence of a loved one. The lyrics reveal that the singer's loneliness is particularly acute because there is nobody else who can make them feel better except for the one who left. This loneliness is attributed to the song's titular emotion of feeling blue, which can signify sadness or longing.

Throughout the song, the singer addresses their departed lover and questions why they have left. They express disappointment in the broken promises of their beloved, who, prior to leaving, vowed to never leave the singer's side. Now the singer only prays for the return of their loved one, seeking the comfort of their affection and companionship once again. They remain steadfast in their love and express their longing to their lover, hoping that they will one day somehow return.

Overall, "I'm Lonely and Blue" is a poignant expression of the human experience of heartbreak and loneliness. It offers a timeless reminder of the enduring emotional pain that can be caused by the absence of a significant other.

Uh, oh, I'm falling in love again, uh, oh
Many's the time I've been two-timed
Many's the time I've been stung
Many a honey took all of my money, but
That was when I was much younger
Made up my mind to be careful
Made up my mind to beware
I was alright until until Saturday night
I met a girl with the goldenest hair
Uh, oh, I'm falling in love again, uh, oh
I thought I'd never get caught again
Never in a hundred, never in a thousand
Never in a million years, never in a million years
She had the bluest of blue eyes
She had the cherriest lips
Shouldn't have have kissed her
I tried to resist her but one kiss, and I was a goner
I couldn't run if I'd wanted
I couldn't run if I tried
Saw what I liked and I liked what I saw
And my heart went along for the ride
Uh, oh, I'm falling in love again, uh, oh
I thought I'd never get caught again
Never in a hundred, never in a thousand
Never in a million years, never in a million years
That was the end of my roamin'
Now that it's over, I'm glad
Through gallavantin', I got in a slam and I'm
Uh, oh, I'm a ring-a-ding daddy
Rockin' the cradle at nighttime
Livin' and lovin' each day
Got me a wife, she's the light of my life
And when I kiss her each morning I say
Uh, oh, I'm falling in love again, uh, oh
I thought I'd never get caught again
Never in a hundred, never in a thousand
Never in a million years, never in a million years
Never in a hundred, never in a thousand
Never in a million years, never in a million years
Uh, oh, uh, oh

I remember being a little kid in the mid to late 90s and my grandma would take me to preschool while listening to an oldies station that was really popular at the time and they would play this song every day when I was on the way to school or out running errands with my grandma. Man I wish I could go back to those times

@laurac555

My 2 year old grandson loves this song...so a new generation is learning how great the music was then.
