In the jungle the mighty jungle the lion sleeps tonight
In the jungle the mighty jungle the lion sleeps tonight

Near the village the peaceful village the lion sleeps tonight
Near the village the peaceful village the lion sleeps tonight

Hush my darling dont cry my darling the lion sleeps tonight
Hush my darling dont fear my darling the lion sleeps tonight

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Jimmie Rodgers's song "Wimoweh" refer to a peaceful and tranquil village that is situated close to the jungle, where the mighty and powerful lion rests. The repetition of "In the jungle the mighty jungle the lion sleeps tonight" and "Near the village the peaceful village the lion sleeps tonight" emphasizes the contrast between the wild and the serene. The lyrics suggest a sense of calm and peace that exists even in close proximity to danger and chaos, represented by the jungle and the lion.

This sense of peace is carried forward as the singer comforts his loved one, telling her not to cry or be afraid because the lion sleeps in the jungle, and thus, they are safe. The song is believed to have originated from South Africa and was initially sung by the Zulu people. The lyrics of the song were written in Zulu and were later translated into English by Pete Seeger.

This is a wonderful rendition of the classic African ballad that proves a showcase for Jimmie's 3-octave range in all its mellifluous perfection. Jimmie Rodgers was a young singer of exceptional talent, admirable poise, and seasoned showmanship. He brought to the art of singing a welcomed integrity, void of all artifice and imposed stylings, and its sincerity and purity simply captivated listeners. And above all, he was & still is, one helluva nice guy!
