Baby I Love You
Jimmy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I can't give you anything but love, baby
That's the only thing I've plenty of, baby
Dream awhile, scheme awhile

You're sure to find
Happiness, and I guess
All those things you've always pinned for
Gee, I'd like to see you looking swell, baby
Diamond bracelets, Woolworth's doesn't sell, baby

Until that lucky day, you know darn well, baby
I can't give you anything but Love

Overall Meaning

In the song "I Can't Give You Anything but Love", Jimmy McHugh expresses his inability to provide the material things his lover desires, but assures her that he can offer her an abundance of love. The lyrics capture the essence of a relationship where one partner is unable to provide lavish gifts or luxury items, and stresses the importance of love over material possessions. The line "I can't give you anything but love, baby" is repeated throughout the song as a reminder of the singer's limitations but also serves as a declaration of his love.

The song uses vivid imagery to convey the singer's sentiments. He paints a picture of the life he wants for his lover, including diamond bracelets and looking swell. However, he acknowledges that these things are not within his reach. Nevertheless, he encourages her to dream and scheme, as he believes she will find happiness and all the things she has always wanted. Ultimately, the song emphasizes the theme of true love despite the absence of wealth.

I first heard this in 1966 when I was 19 years old, that summer in August my brother used to sing it and play his guitar. Many years later, I tried to find this song, but couldn't remember the artist. In the 2000's my son found Little Miltons version which was wonderful too, but I said that don't sound like the man I remember but I was trilled to just hear it again after so many many years, then in 2016 or 17 I was scrolling YouTube and there it was by Jimmy Holiday and as I listened it was like being in a time machine It was the voice I remembered, what a great thrill and I also was double thrilled to find the other lost record he made How can I Forget. What a great dicovery, thanks to YouTube
