Cliff moved to Kingston in 1962. After he released two singles that failed to make much of an impression, his career took off when his "Hurricane Hattie" became a hit, while he was aged just 14; it was produced by Leslie Kong, with whom Cliff would remain until Kong's death. Later local hit singles included "King of Kings", "Dearest Beverley" and "Pride and Passion". In 1964, Cliff was chosen as one of the Jamaican representatives at the World's Fair, and Cliff soon signed to Island Records and moved to Britain. Island initially (and unsuccessfully) tried to sell Cliff to the rock audience, but his career took off in the late 1960s. His international debut album was Hard Road to Travel, which received excellent reviews and included "Waterfall", a Brazilian hit that won the International Song Festival.
"Waterfall" was followed in 1969 by "Wonderful World, Beautiful People" and "Vietnam" in 1970, both popular throughout most of the world. Folk rock singer-songwriter Bob Dylan even called "Vietnam" the best protest song he'd ever heard. Wonderful World included a cover of Cat Stevens' "Wild World", which was a success in 1970.
Leslie Kong died of a heart attack in 1971. The soundtrack to the reggae film The Harder They Come was a huge success that sold well across the world, but did not break Cliff into the mainstream. After a series of albums, Cliff took a break and traveled to Africa, exploring his newfound Muslim spirituality. He quickly returned to music, touring for several years before he recorded with Kool & the Gang for Power & the Glory (1983). (During the 1981 River Tour, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band added Cliff's little-known "Trapped" to their live set; it achieved great prominence when included on 1985's We Are the World benefit album.) The follow-up, Cliff Hanger (1985) won a Grammy Award, though it was his last major success in the U.S. until 1993. He continued to sell well in Jamaica and, to a lesser extent, the UK, returning to the mainstream pop charts in the U.S. and elsewhere with a version of Johnny Nash's "I Can See Clearly Now" on the Cool Runnings film soundtrack in 1993 .
In 2002, Cliff released his new album, Fantastic Plastic People in Europe, after first providing free downloads using Delacove's People Music Media p2p software. This album featured collaborations with Joe Strummer, Annie Lennox, and Sting as well as new songs that were very reminiscent of Cliff's original hits. In 2004 Cliff completely reworked the songs, dropping the traditional reggae in favor of an electronica sound, for inclusion in Black Magic.
Cliff has also covered the famous African song "The Lion Sleeps Tonight".
His recording of 'You Can Get It If You Really Want' was used as a campaign anthem by the Sandinista National Liberation Front in the 1990 election in Nicaragua (they lost). It was also adopted by the British Conservative Party during their annual conference in October, 2007. It is unclear whether Mr Cliff endorsed either party. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame March 15,2010.
A Hard Rain's A
Jimmy Cliff Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And where have you been my darling young one?
I've stumbled on the side
Of twelve misty mountains
I've walked and I've crawled
On six crooked highways
I've stepped in the middle
I've been out in front of a dozen dead oceans
I've been ten thousand miles in
The mouth of a graveyard
And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard
And it's a hard
It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall
Oh, what did you see, my blue eyed son?
And what did you see, my darling young one?
I saw a newborn baby with
Wild wolves all around it
I saw a highway of diamonds with nobody on it
I saw a black branch with
Blood that kept drippin'
I saw a room full of
Men with their hammers a-bleedin'
I saw a white ladder all covered with water
I saw ten thousand talkers whose
Tongues were all broken
I saw guns and sharp swords in
The hands of young children
And it's a hard, it's a hard
It's a hard and it's a hard
It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall
And what did you hear, my blue-eyed son?
And what did you hear, my darling young one?
I heard the sound of a thunder
It roared out a warnin'
I heard the roar of a wave
That could drown the whole world
I heard one hundred drummers
Whose hands were a-blazin'
I heard ten thousand whisperin'
And nobody listenin'
I heard one person starve
I heard many people laughin'
Heard the song of a poet
Who died in the gutter
Heard the sound of a clown
Who cried in the alley
And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard
It's a hard
And it's a hard rain's a-gonna fall
Oh, who did you meet my blue-eyed son?
Who did you meet, my darling young one?
I met a young child beside a dead pony
I met a white man who walked a black dog
I met a young woman whose body was burning
I met a young girl, she gave me a rainbow
I met one man who was wounded in love
I met another man who was wounded in hatred
And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard
It's a hard
And it's a hard rain's a-gonna fall
And what'll you do now, my blue-eyed son?
And what'll you do now my darling young one?
I'm a-goin' back out 'fore
The rain starts a-fallin'
I'll walk to the depths of
The deepest black forest
Where the people are a many and
Their hands are all empty
Where the pellets of poison
Are flooding their waters
Where the home in the valley
Meets the damp dirty prison
Where the executioner's face is
Always well hidden
Where hunger is ugly
Where souls are forgotten
Where black is the color
Where none is the number
And I'll tell and think it and
Speak it and breathe it
And reflect it from the mountain so
All souls can see it
Then I'll stand on the ocean
Until I start sinkin'
But I'll know my songs well
Before I start singin'
And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard
And it's a hard
It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall
The lyrics of "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" by Jimmy Cliff paint a vivid picture of a world consumed by chaos and suffering. The song explores themes of desperation, destruction, and resilience in the face of adversity. The repeated refrain of "it's a hard rain's a-gonna fall" emphasizes the impending sense of doom and the harsh reality that awaits.
The opening lines ask where the singer has been, implying that they have witnessed and experienced a great deal of turmoil. The references to misty mountains, crooked highways, and sad forests indicate a journey through challenging and treacherous terrain. The image of stumbling and crawling suggests a struggle to navigate through this harsh world.
The second verse continues the narrative of what the singer has seen. They describe encountering wild wolves near a newborn baby, symbolizing the threat of danger and vulnerability. The highway of diamonds with nobody on it represents the emptiness and futility of material wealth. The image of a black branch dripping blood and the men with bleeding hammers suggest violence and suffering. The white ladder covered in water conveys a feeling of isolation and being trapped.
In the third verse, the lyrics move to what the singer has heard. The thunder and roaring wave represent the destructive forces that could potentially destroy the world. The mention of drummers and whispering voices conveys the sense of impending conflict and unrest. The reference to starvation and laughter juxtapose the harsh realities of poverty with the indifference and apathy of those who have not experienced it. The song also captures the tragic fate of artists like the poet who died in the gutter and the clown who cried in the alley, symbolizing the struggles and marginalization of creative expression.
The final verse explores the people the singer has encountered. They describe meeting individuals who are wounded by love and hatred, highlighting the profound impact that emotions can have on human experience. The verses convey a sense of empathy for those who suffer, with the mention of the young woman burning, the young girl offering a ray of hope in the form of a rainbow, and the wounded individuals the singer meets.
Ultimately, the song ends with determination and a call to action. The singer expresses their intention to continue their journey and to speak out against injustice. The mention of standing on the ocean until sinking implies a willingness to sacrifice everything for the cause. The final lines indicate the power of music to convey messages of truth and hope, and the desire to share these messages with all.
