What Would I Say to You Now
Jimmy Eat World Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Not paying attention to me.
If we talk, just curious, would this end up like it always does?
All the wrong I've done.
All the wrong I'll do.
Keeps me from trying.
It keeps me quiet.
Throw out your arms to each side.
When we talk think what we say: there's questions then silence and
In silence we remain.
All the wrong I've done and all the wrong I'll do.
It keeps me from trying.
Keeps me from calling you.
Something I just found out.
Something you know by now.
Hope makes you so strong.
Strength keeps you alone and far away.
In Jimmy Eat World's song "What Would I Say to You Now," the lyrics convey a sense of longing and regret in a failing relationship. The singer is trying to initiate a conversation with their partner, who is disinterested and rejecting of their attempts to connect. The lyrics highlight a communication breakdown between the two, with the singer questioning whether any conversation will result in the same disappointing outcome. The lines "All the wrong I've done. All the wrong I'll do. Keeps me from trying. It keeps me quiet" demonstrate a fear of failure that is preventing the singer from making an effort to salvage the relationship. The ultimate result is a sense of emptiness, with the presence of silence signifying the dead end that the relationship has reached.
The lyrics of "What Would I Say to You Now" are further intensified by the emotive sound of the song. The slow tempo and melancholic instrumental accompaniment complement the sense of resignation conveyed by the lyrics. The vocals are emotive and strained, bringing out the raw emotion present in the lyrics. The song as a whole is a powerful and introspective exploration of the emotions and thoughts that accompany a failing relationship.
