Jimmy Raney began his jazz guitar career very early with the history showing he played in the Jerry Wald band in 1944 at age 17.
In 1946 he worked for a time as guitarist with the Max Miller Quartet at Elmer's in Chicago, his first paying gig. Raney also worked in the Artie Shaw Orchestra and collaborated with Woody Herman for nine months in 1948. He also collaborated and recorded with Buddy DeFranco, Al Haig and later on with Bob Brookmeyer. In 1967 alcoholism and other professional difficulties led him to leave New York City and return to his native Louisville. He resurfaced in the 1970s and also did work with his son Doug, who is also a guitarist. Raney suffered for thirty years from Meniere's Disease, a degenerative condition that eventually led to near complete deafness in both ears. Fortunately, his playing remained unaffected. Raney died of heart failure in Louisville Ky. on May 10th of 1995, just short of his 68th birthday. An obituary in the New York Times referred to Jimmy Raney as 'one of the most gifted and influential postwar jazz guitarists in the world .
How About You
Jimmy Raney Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Life can be a joy
But the note they end on
Will depend on
Little pleasures they will share
So let us compare
I like New York in June, how about you?
I love a fireside when a storm is due.
I like potato chips, moonlight and motor trips,
How about you?
I'm mad about good books, can't get my fill,
And Franklin Roosevelt's looks give me a thrill.
Holding hands at the movie show,
When all the lights are low
May not be new, but I like it,
How about you?
I like Jack Benny's jokes.
To a degree.
I love the common folks.
That includes me.
I like to window shop on 5th Avenue.
I like banana splits, late supper at the Ritz,
How about you?
I love to dream of fame, maybe I'll shine.
I'd love to see your name right beside mine.
I can see we're in harmony,
Looks like we both agree
On what to do,
And I like it, how about you?
The lyrics to Jimmy Raney's "How About You" are a playful tribute to the little pleasures in life that two people can share when they fall in love. The opening lines suggest that the success of a romantic relationship depends on the enjoyment of these small pleasures, establishing the theme of mutual satisfaction that runs throughout the rest of the song.
The first verse draws attention to the singer's likes and dislikes, and invites the listener to compare their own preferences. The mentions of New York in June and a Gershwin tune are sensory experiences that evoke feelings of warmth and nostalgia. The desire for a fireside during a storm is comforting and intimate, while the mention of potato chips and motor trips suggest a sense of fun and adventure.
The second verse continues with a list of things the singer enjoys, including good books and the appearance of Franklin Roosevelt, as well as more material pleasures like banana splits and late suppers at the Ritz. The lyrics culminate in an expression of shared desire and harmony, as the singer dreams of fame and companionship with their beloved. Through its celebration of small pleasures and mutual satisfaction, "How About You" ultimately becomes a love song that invites the listener to revel in life's simple joys.
