Bad Bad Whiskey
Jimmy Witherspoon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Though folks with good intentions
Tell me to save my tears
Well I'm so mad about him
I can't live without him

Never treats me sweet and gentle
The way he should
I've got it bad
And that ain't good

My poor heart is so sentimental
Not made of wood
I've got it so bad
And that ain't good

But when the fish are jumpin'
And Friday rolls around
My man an' I, we gin some
We pray some, and sin some

He don't love me like I love him
The way he should
I've got it bad
And that ain't good

Yes I've got it bad
And that ain't good

Overall Meaning

In the first verse, the lyrics express the singer's frustration with well-intentioned people telling her to hold back her tears because she is always upset about her relationship. The line "I'm so mad about him, I can't live without him" suggests that she is in love with someone who treats her poorly, but she is unable to let go of the relationship. The second verse illustrates how her lover does not treat her kindly, and despite this, she cannot help but be drawn to him. Her heart is "sentimental" and not "made of wood," indicating that she cannot help her feelings for him. The chorus "I've got it bad and that ain't good" is a clever play on words, as "having it bad" means being in a bad situation, but it is also a reference to the famous Duke Ellington song "I Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good)."

In the second verse, the lyrics suggest that the couple has a complicated relationship that involves drinking, praying, and sinning. However, despite spending time together, the man does not love the singer the way she loves him. The final chorus is repeated, emphasizing how the singer is stuck in a situation where she cannot move on from a relationship that is not healthy for her.
