Desafinado
João Gilberto featuring Antonio Carlos Jobim & Orchestra Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Eu possuo apenas o que Deus me deu
No fundo do peito bate calado
Que no peito dos desafinados
também bate um coração
In "Desafinado," João Gilberto sings about the pain that comes with being told he's out of tune, and how his limitations as a singer are as much a part of his uniqueness and authenticity as anyone else's talents. Evocative of the bossa nova movement, the song suggests that being off-key is not really a shortcoming, but rather an aspect of music and life that is natural and essential. The lyrics convey a mix of frustration, humor and self-deprecation, which is something inherent to the Brazilian musical tradition, especially the samba.
As an interpretter of the song, João is almost conversational, his phrasing relaxed and conversational, and yet deeply emotional. He takes the time to emphasize the feelings behind the words, describing his own experience of love lost while also paying tribute to the value of every person’s musical expression regardless of skill. His voice remains in a similar intimate and expressive register throughout the song, reminiscent of the style he helped establish in bossa nova.

Portuguese has to be the most beautiful language in the world. I was enthralled back in the early '70's, hearing Jobim's music. Have most of his albums, along with a fave of mine - Stan Getz, and all he brought to the sound. I do understand a little, speaking a little Spanish ! We're so lucky to have access to these albums now. For me? It's again. I love it.
