In the late '60s and early '70s, Baez came into her songwriting own, penning many songs (most notably "Diamonds & Rust," a nostalgic piece about her ill-fated romance with Bob Dylan, and "Sweet Sir Galahad," a song about sister Mimi Fariña's ( of Richard & Mimi Fariña fame) second marriage, and continued to meld her songcraft with topical issues. She was outspoken in her disapproval of the Vietnam war and later the CIA-backed coups in many Latin American countries.
She was also instrumental in the Civil Rights movement, marching with Dr. Martin Luther King on many occassions and being jailed for her beliefs. In 1963, her performance of "We Shall Overcome" at the Lincoln Memorial just prior to Dr. King's famous "I Have A Dream..." speech helped confirm the song as the Civil Rights anthem.
In December 1972, she traveled to Hanoi, North Vietnam, and was caught in that country's "Christmas Campaign," in which the U.S. bombed the city more times than any other during the entire war. While pregnant with her only son, Gabriel, she performed a handful of songs in the middle of the night on day one of the 1969 Woodstock festival. She is considered the "Queen of Folk" for being at the forefront of the 1960s folk revival and inspiring generations of female folksingers that followed. Over fifty years after she first began singing publicly in 1958, Joan Baez continues to tour, demonstrate in favor of human rights and nonviolence, and release albums for a world of devoted fans.

Casida Of The Lament
Joan Baez Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Because I do not want to hear the weeping
But from behind the great walls
Nothing else is heard but the weeping
There are very few angels that sing
There are very few dogs that bark
A thousand violins fit into the palm of my hand
But the weeping is an immense dog
The weeping is an immense angel
The weeping is an immense violin
The tears muzzle the wind
Nothing else is heard but the weeping
The Casida Of The Lament by Joan Baez speaks to the overwhelming nature of grief and sorrow. The singer has shut themselves off from the world, closing their balcony as if to try and escape the unbearable sound of crying. But, as the poem emphasizes, no matter how hard one tries to isolate themselves, it's impossible to fully flee the effect of sorrow. Despite the singer's efforts, they can still hear the crying from behind the "great walls" in the distance.
The middle of the poem features a striking juxtaposition, stating that even though there are few angels that sing and dogs that bark, the weeping is like an "immense dog" and an "immense angel." The imagery is potent; although grief feels like an overwhelming weight, it's also a reminder of the depth of human emotion. The ending lines imply that the tears themselves are so powerful that they can silence even the wind.
The song seems to communicate the idea that one cannot fully escape the sound and power of weeping, but it's also a reminder of the universality of human emotion. It's an acknowledgment of the overwhelming nature of sorrow, and the fact that despite our attempts to escape it, we cannot help but feel it acutely.

But from behind the great walls
Even though I try to isolate myself, the suffering persists
Nothing else is heard but the weeping
The sorrow is overwhelming and all-consuming
There are very few angels that sing
There is little joy or hope in this world
There are very few dogs that bark

A thousand violins fit into the palm of my hand
Despite the beauty in this world, it is small and powerless next to the sorrow
But the weeping is an immense dog
