Diamonds And Rust
Joan Baez Lyrics

Well, I'll be damned
Here comes your ghost again
But that's not unusual
It's just that the moon is full
And you happened to call
And here I sit
Hand on the telephone
Hearing a voice I'd known
A couple of light years ago
Heading straight for a fall

As I remember your eyes
Were bluer than robin's eggs
My poetry was lousy you said
Where are you calling from?
A booth in the midwest
Ten years ago
I bought you some cufflinks
You brought me something
We both know what memories can bring
They bring diamonds and rust

Well, you burst on the scene
Already a legend
The unwashed phenomenon
The original vagabond
You strayed into my arms
And there you stayed
Temporarily lost at sea
The Madonna was yours for free
Yes, the girl on the half-shell
Could keep you unharmed

Now I see you standing
With brown leaves falling all around
And snow in your hair
Now you're smiling out the window
Of that crummy hotel
Over Washington Square
Our breath comes out white clouds
Mingles and hangs in the air
Speaking strictly for me
We both could have died then and there

Now you're telling me
You're not nostalgic
Then give me another word for it
You who are so good with words
And at keeping things vague
'Cause I need some of that vagueness now
It's all come back too clearly
Yes, I loved you dearly
And if you're offering me diamonds and rust
I've already paid

@Mountain Man bob's true love is only himself.

Joan is better off without him.
She has a solid career, millions of fans and can retire and live a peaceful and tranquil life. Being single is not the same as being lonely.
That idea went out of style with bouffant hairdos and cat-eye glasses.
Women don't need a man to be complete and successful.
And Ms. Baez is so talented and her looks are so unique that she is fine the way she is.
Not that she has any intentions of retiring. The woman has health and energy and so many projects that that bum dylan is lightyears away from her mind.
He looks like a snotrag after a long day's use.

I saw her about 10 years ago in Durham NC, where I was sitting on the 3rd row. She was fantastic, but she didn't do this song for the entire regular concert. On her first encore, she still didn't sing it so I stood and called for "Diamonds and Rust".....Her second encore ended the same way, and on her third encore, she looked and pointed at me and said "this is for you". :) I still get goose bumps thinking about this.

@Joe Vokey she doesn't have a squeaky voice...maybe a little??.

Doubt it.

Hmmm, I suspect you have made this up. Still anyone could do the same....

This one of the best songs ever written. The lyrics and melody, her voice, every single aspect of it makes it perfect!

Artivist Joan

@Mountain Man power to you.

Certainly, her voice and lyrics in this song are beautiful, objectively speaking. Joni Mitchell and Mama Cass are other great musicians, they sing perfectly but still they don't move me like Bob howling in Like A Rolling Stone or Lennon screaming about suicide in Yer Blues or tripping in a surreal composition like in A Day in The Life,Tomorrow Never Knows, Across the Universe and Strawberry Fields. It's really a matter of connection, in music or any art form. Feminine aesthetics and sensibility do not attract me so much, they are undoubtedly pleasant but nothing else for me

Artivist Joan

@Mountain Man IT's a thing. Just keep your mind open, there might be something that strikes you and you find out that it was made by Feminine Hands.

Yeah, she has a great voice but i connect more with Bob or any other male artist i love. My favorite musicians, painters, sculptors, poets, novelists, photographers, movie directors are all men.
