In the late '60s and early '70s, Baez came into her songwriting own, penning many songs (most notably "Diamonds & Rust," a nostalgic piece about her ill-fated romance with Bob Dylan, and "Sweet Sir Galahad," a song about sister Mimi Fariña's ( of Richard & Mimi Fariña fame) second marriage, and continued to meld her songcraft with topical issues. She was outspoken in her disapproval of the Vietnam war and later the CIA-backed coups in many Latin American countries.
She was also instrumental in the Civil Rights movement, marching with Dr. Martin Luther King on many occassions and being jailed for her beliefs. In 1963, her performance of "We Shall Overcome" at the Lincoln Memorial just prior to Dr. King's famous "I Have A Dream..." speech helped confirm the song as the Civil Rights anthem.
In December 1972, she traveled to Hanoi, North Vietnam, and was caught in that country's "Christmas Campaign," in which the U.S. bombed the city more times than any other during the entire war. While pregnant with her only son, Gabriel, she performed a handful of songs in the middle of the night on day one of the 1969 Woodstock festival. She is considered the "Queen of Folk" for being at the forefront of the 1960s folk revival and inspiring generations of female folksingers that followed. On July 28, 2019, following dates across Europe, Baez performed her final concert at Madrid's Teatro Real. In January 2021, Baez received a 2020 Kennedy Center Honor.
Pack Up Your Sorrows
Joan Baez Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Come here and listen to the sky
Come walking high above the rolling of the sea
And watch the swallows as they fly
There is no sorrow like the murmur of their wings
There is no choir like their song
There is no power like the freedom of their flight
Do you hear the calling of a hundred thousand voice
Hear the trumbling in the stone
Do you hear the angry bells ringing in the night
Do you hear the swallows when they've flown?
And will the breezes blow the petals from your hand
And will some loving ease your pain
And will the silence strike confusion from your soul
And will the swallows come again?
The lyrics of Joan Baez's song Pack Up Your Sorrows speak of finding solace in nature and the freedom of flight. The opening lines invite the listener to come and wander quietly, to listen to the wind and the sky, and to watch the swallows as they fly high above the rolling sea. These lines set the tone for the rest of the song, which speaks of finding comfort and peace in the beauty of the natural world.
The next stanza speaks specifically of the swallows and the power of their flight. There is no sorrow like the murmur of their wings or choir like their song, which speaks to the emotive impact of their presence. The swallows are depicted as roaming alone, perhaps a metaphor for the idea that one can find freedom even in solitude.
The final stanza poses a series of questions, asking if the breezes will blow the petals from one's hand, if someone will ease their pain, and if the swallows will come again. These questions are open-ended and invite the listener to reflect on themes of transience, impermanence, and the cyclical nature of life.
