In the late '60s and early '70s, Baez came into her songwriting own, penning many songs (most notably "Diamonds & Rust," a nostalgic piece about her ill-fated romance with Bob Dylan, and "Sweet Sir Galahad," a song about sister Mimi Fariña's ( of Richard & Mimi Fariña fame) second marriage, and continued to meld her songcraft with topical issues. She was outspoken in her disapproval of the Vietnam war and later the CIA-backed coups in many Latin American countries.
She was also instrumental in the Civil Rights movement, marching with Dr. Martin Luther King on many occassions and being jailed for her beliefs. In 1963, her performance of "We Shall Overcome" at the Lincoln Memorial just prior to Dr. King's famous "I Have A Dream..." speech helped confirm the song as the Civil Rights anthem.
In December 1972, she traveled to Hanoi, North Vietnam, and was caught in that country's "Christmas Campaign," in which the U.S. bombed the city more times than any other during the entire war. While pregnant with her only son, Gabriel, she performed a handful of songs in the middle of the night on day one of the 1969 Woodstock festival. She is considered the "Queen of Folk" for being at the forefront of the 1960s folk revival and inspiring generations of female folksingers that followed. Over fifty years after she first began singing publicly in 1958, Joan Baez continues to tour, demonstrate in favor of human rights and nonviolence, and release albums for a world of devoted fans.

No Man Is An Island
Joan Baez Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
No man stands alone,
Each man's joy is joy to me,
Each man's grief is my own.
We need one another,
So I will defend,
Each man as my brother,
Each man as my friend.
I heard the music start,
The song that they were singing,
Is ringing in my heart.
No man is an island,
Way out in the blue,
We all look to the one above,
For our strength to renew.
When I help my brother,
Then I know that I,
Plant the seed of friendship,
That will never die.
The iconic song by Joan Baez, "No Man Is An Island," is an ode to the interconnectedness of humanity. The opening lines, "No man is an island, no man stands alone," set the tone for the rest of the song, emphasizing the fundamental truth that people rely on each other for joy, comfort, and support. Baez reflects on the importance of helping and defending others, and seeing them as brothers and friends. The song is a call to action: to look out for each other, to be there for each other in times of joy and sorrow, and to plant the seed of friendship that will keep on renewing and blossoming.
Baez's lyrics also echo the spiritual and religious beliefs that we all look to a higher power for strength, and we must help each other as much as we can. "The song that they were singing, is ringing in my heart" could be interpreted as Baez feeling overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support shown by the crowd, or the power of the music to bring people together. As musical instruments have been used by many cultures since the dawn of recorded history to connect with forces beyond the tangible realm, singing has also been a way to celebrate and affirm belonging with others.
