Desafinado

Eu possuo apenas o que Deus me deu
No fundo do peito, bate calado
No fundo do peito, bate calado
No fundo do peito, bate calado
The lyrics to "Desafinado" speak to a sense of exclusion and otherness that the singer feels as a result of being classified as "desafinado," or out of tune. The opening lines address the pain caused by someone accusing the singer of being a bad singer, while the following lines address the idea that only some people are gifted with perfect pitch. The notion that everyone has different gifts but equal worth is underscored by the repetition of the line "Eu possuo apenas o que Deus me deu" ("I possess only what God gave me").
The song then moves into a discussion of what it means to be "antimusical," and again emphasizes the importance of difference and accepting oneself for who they are. The singer suggests that not conforming to societal expectations is simply a part of the "bossa nova" style, and thus completely natural. The final stanzas speak to the idea that even those who are "out of tune" have feelings and hearts, as explained in the line "Que no peito dos desafinados também bate um coração" ("In the hearts of the out of tune, there also beats a heart").
Overall, "Desafinado" is a song about embracing one's differences and recognizing the humanity in everyone, no matter how they may be classified by society.

Joan Chamorro is probably the best thing that has happened in music in the last 30 years. Love you brother, Jim Lochead..

How on God’s green earth is Catalunya producing such magnificent you Bossa singers and players? And sprinkled amongst them are old heaviesthat fit right in. This is where the joy is!
@themistermax
I'll second that! It's like the epicenter of jazz and bossa today.

Rita's one of the kind vocals already emerging here, in the Latin and related music she's got no equals. No one is as flexible and subtle as she.
