Dirty Deeds
Joan Jett Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If you're havin' trouble with the high school head
He's givin' you the blues
You wanna graduate but not in his bed
Here's what you gotta do
Pick up the phone
I'm always home
Call me anytime
Just ring three sixty two four three six o
I lead a life of crime

Dirty deeds done dirt cheap

If you got a lady and you want her gone
But you ain't got the guts
She keeps on naggin' at you night and day
Enough to drive you nuts
Pick up the phone
And leave her alone
It's time you made a stand
For a fee I'm happy to play
Your night time plan

Dirty deeds done dirt cheap

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Joan Jett's "Dirty Deeds" portray a character who seems to offer a unique service for those experiencing difficulty with certain aspects of their lives. The song's title that says "Dirty deeds done dirt cheap" implies that the offer made could be rather questionable. The first verse explains how the character can assist in dealing with a difficult or manipulative school principal. She advises the distressed student to reach out to her anytime and assures him that she is always available to provide her services. The phrase "dirty deeds" suggests that the help is not entirely legal, while "dirt cheap" could indicate that it is a cost-efficient way to solve the problem.

In the second verse, the character offers similar help to someone who desires to end a relationship. She tells him to leave her alone and offers to play the role of the night-time instigator. This scenario also involves a "dirty" situation, and the phrase "dirty deeds done dirt cheap" takes on a sexual context. The song's lyrics suggest a byproduct of a culture that offers quick-fix solutions to problems, which may have dangerous consequences. Overall, it emphasizes the human desire for instant gratification without considering the long-term effects of our actions.

Joan Jett, the woman who made an entire generation fall in love with biker girls.

Very few bands can actually do ACDC the way it's meant to be played, Joan Jett does it remarkably well.

@robertlalexander4083

AC/DC would not approve. A slide guitar solo misses the mark. The riffs were way off and in no way does AC/DC have any Saxophone.

@theseustoo

@@robertlalexander4083 Meh... opinions are like assholes... everyone's got one... Imo, this is bloody exellent cover. As for slide guitar? What do you have against it? Takes a lot more skill to play slide than merely to fret a solo...

@TiernanSongs

She has a gift for covers in general. I am such a hardcore Nirvana fan that I can't stand anyone going near their material, but, when she stepped up to the mic for the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame, I was like, "Okay!".
