Someone Else's Roses
Joan Regan Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The note you sent I wasn't meant to see.
Why did they bring me someone else's roses
The kind of rose you always chose for me
But still I never will forget you.
And true you said you'll always be
You sent your love with someone else's roses
Won't you tell me it was really meant for me
The note you sent I wasn't meant to see.
You sent your love with someone else's roses
Won't you tell me it was really meant for me
In Joan Regan's song "Someone Else's Roses," the singer expresses confusion and hurt upon receiving roses and a note from someone who had previously promised their love. The roses are a symbol of love and affection, but they are not meant for the singer - they are someone else's roses. This suggests that the person who sent them was not sincere in their promises of love, or perhaps has moved on to someone else. The note that accompanies the roses is intended for someone else as well, adding to the singer's sense of displacement and heartbreak.
Despite the hurt and confusion, the singer admits that she will likely never forget the person who sent the roses. This suggests that there were genuine feelings between the two at some point, even if they were ultimately not strong enough to sustain a lasting relationship. The singer pleads with the sender to tell her that the love expressed in the note was meant for her, indicating that she still holds onto a glimmer of hope that their relationship could be salvaged.
The song evokes a bittersweet nostalgia for a love that could have been. The roses, which are a recurring motif throughout the lyrics, serve as a reminder of the past and the emotions attached to it. The singer's yearning for the sender's affection is palpable, but the reality that the roses were meant for someone else serves as a painful reminder that their love may not be as true as she once believed.

I remember this although I would never have dreamt of buying it back in 1954. I was more into Frankie Laine, Guy Mitchell, Nat Cole, etc., but strangely i kind of like this song now - must be an age thing! Your posting name could describe me! I am called Tommy, I was born in 1940 and I'm 70 years young. Thanks for the Joan Regan memory.
