Cosmia
Joanna Newsom Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When you ate I saw your eyelashes
Saw them shake like wind on rushes
In the corn field when she called me
Moths surround me, thought they'd drown me

And I miss your precious heart
And I miss your precious heart
Dried rose petal, red brown circles
Framed your eyes and stained your knuckles
Dried rose petals, red brown circles
Framed your eyes and stained your knuckles

And all those lonely nights down by the river
Brought me bread and water, water in
But though I tried so hard my little darling
I couldn't keep the night from coming in

And all those lonely nights down by the river
Brought me bread and water by the kith and the kin
Now in the quiet hour when I am sleepin'
I cannot keep the night from coming in

Why've you gone away? Gone away again
I'll sleep through the rest of my days
If you've gone away again
I'll sleep through the rest of my days
And I will sleep through the rest of my days
And I'll sleep through the rest of my days

Why've you gone away?
Seven suns, seven suns
Away, away, away, away

Can you hear me? Will you listen?
Don't come near me, don't go missing
And in the lissome light of evening
Help me Cosmia, I'm grieving

And all those lonely nights down by the river
Brought me bread and water, water in
But though I tried so hard my little darling
I couldn't keep the night from coming in

And all those lonely nights down by the river
Brought me bread and water in the kith and the kin
Now in the quiet hour when I am sleepin'
I cannot keep the night from comin' in

Beneath the porch light we've all been circling
Beat our dust hearts, singe our flour wings
But in the corner, something is happening
Wild Cosmia, what have you seen?

Water were your limbs, and the fire was your hair
And then the moonlight caught your eye
And you rose through the air
Well, if you've seen true light, then this is my prayer
Will you call me when you get there?

And I miss your precious heart
And I miss your precious heart
And miss, and miss, and miss
And miss, and miss, and miss, and miss, and miss your heart

But release your precious heart
To it's feast for precious hearts

Overall Meaning

The song Cosmia by American singer-songwriter Joanna Newsom is a mournful and ethereal ballad exploring themes of grief, loss, and longing. The lyrics describe a protagonist who misses someone dearly and is haunted by their absence. The song is filled with vivid nature imagery, drawing comparisons between the fragility of a moth and the vulnerability of the human heart.

The first stanza describes the shockingly delicate nature of eyelashes and how they are reminiscent of rushes blowing in the wind. The singer then recalls a memory of being surrounded by moths in a cornfield, feeling overwhelmed and scared. The chorus repeats the sentiment of missing a "precious heart," emphasizing the feeling of longing.

The second stanza uses the imagery of rose petals to describe the physical appearance of the person the singer is missing. The repetition of "dried rose petal, red brown circles" amplifies the sense of loss and mourning. The following verses recount lonely nights spent by the river, as well as the struggle to keep the darkness at bay. The song's conclusion is a plea to Cosmia, referencing her wild nature and ability to see true light, to call the singer once she reaches her destination.

Overall, Cosmia is a haunting and emotional song that explores themes of love and loss through beautiful and evocative imagery.

4 or 5 years ago we had this summer of insane thunderstorms and every time we had one I would sit on the porch with some hot rooibos tea and listen to this album while I watched the lightning basically envelop my house and it was one of the most relaxing and enjoyable times of my entire life. If you’re reading this, take this song outside and watch the next thunderstorm that passes through. You’ll be in awe of the splendor of the natural world and so satisfied with your place in it.

@TehStrickland

Wonderful advice! I've pinned this so more will see :)
On a similar note, I used to take a book out to a local stream and sit on the bank to read with this album playing in my headphones. I can't hear these songs or think about those books without recalling the sincere inner peace those times brought me.

@@TehStrickland I live in a pretty ghetto area of Florida so there's no nice majestic areas down here. But i plan on going down to the canals behind the neighborhood to listen to this album to be with nature

@TehStrickland

@@ladyheroin.v4143 Greetings fellow Floridian :D
I know that feeling. I've been all over this state, and in some parts there's just nothing nice looking... but there are some gems around. Best of luck at the canals, I hope it brings tranquility.

@@TehStrickland Lots of ants and dogs! Was a dope experience in all

@RealBradMiller

I will take you up on that! I've got some old Rooibos I used for betta water. Can't wait!

The moment at 6:22 when the harp goes faster as she sings "i miss" FUCKING KILLS ME my heart stops beating to hear it

@ryanhomcy7759

The strings accenting "miss" over and over near the end make an already extremely moving song completely overwhelming.
