Endless Sleep
Jody Reynolds & The Storms Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The night was black, rain fallin' down
Looked for my baby, she's nowhere around
Traced her footsteps down to the shore
'Fraid she's gone forever more

I looked at the sea and it seemed to say
"I took your baby from you away"
I heard a voice cryin' in the deep
"Come join me, baby, in my endless sleep"

Why did we quarrel, why did we fight?
Why did I leave her alone tonight?
That's why her footsteps ran into the sea
That's why my baby has gone from me

I looked at the sea and it seemed to say
"I took your baby from you away"
I heard a voice cryin' in the deep
"Come join me, baby, in my endless sleep"

Ran in the water, heart full of fear
There in the breakers I saw her near
Reached for my darlin', held her to me
Stole her away from the angry sea

I looked at the sea and it seemed to say
"You took your baby from me away"
My heart cried out "she's mine to keep"
I saved my baby from an endless sleep

Endless sleep, endless sleep
Endless sleep, endless sleep

Overall Meaning

Jody Reynolds's song Endless Sleep tells the story of a man who cannot find his loved one and fears that she may have drowned in the sea. The night is dark and the rain is falling as he searches for her, and he is led to the shore by her footprints. He is devastated at the thought of losing her forever and desperately searches for her, but all he hears is the voice of the sea, telling him that it has taken her away. In his despair, he hears her voice calling out to him from the depths of the ocean, inviting him to join her in an endless sleep.

The lyrics suggest that the man has had a falling out with his lover, and he is haunted by the question of what could have caused their quarrel. He wonders why he left her alone on this fateful night, leading her to run into the sea. He feels guilty that he could not save her, and that he may have contributed to her demise. However, when he finally finds her in the water, he is overjoyed and relieved to have saved her, and he vows to never let her go again.

Overall, the song is a haunting ballad that captures the fear and uncertainty of losing a loved one, as well as the hope and determination to save them. It is a poignant reminder of the power of love and the lengths that we will go to protect those we care about.

@curbyourenthusiasm9874

Fun fact: the song was actually supposed to be more depressing, demon records made Jody to give more of a happy ending

@orangeandblackattack

that is correct

@bobbyheffley4955

The title is a euphemism for death.

@larryparis925

@Bobby Heffley As is Raymond Chandler’s book titled The Big Sleep.

@lindaeasley5606

I think the happy ending killed ,so to speak ,the mood of the whole song.It should have stayed a tragedy song with his love being dead.
I don't think the record company or radio stations would allow a song that ended with double suicide

@t40onbass

It's ironic that a record company named Demon wanted this tune to have a happy ending!
