Don't You Want Me
Jody Watley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I first laid my eyes upon you
I knew right then and there you were the one
Eyes so deep, you send me melting
And then you smiled as if to say, “Oh, yeah”

But then you seemed to change your mind
You looked away like you were, oh, so shy
Is the game you're playing hard to get
Won't you tell me, oh, ho

Want me, want me like I want you
To touch you and to hold you tight
Don't you want me like I want you
To kiss and love all through the night

I'd like to know more than just your name
Did you come here alone or with someone
If only you would open up
And let me know just where you're comin' from

Are you lookin' for a new love
Or does commitment seem to bring you down
Is that a look of yes or is it no
Please don't tease me, ho...oh...

Want me, don't you want me
To touch you and to hold you tight
Don't you want me like I want you
To kiss and love all through the night

Oh, whoa, yeah
Don't you want
Oh, whoa, yeah
Don't you want

Want me, don't you want me
To touch you and to hold you tight
Don't you want me like I want you
To kiss and love all through the night

Are you lookin' for a new love
Or does commitment seem to bring you down
Is that a look of yes or is it no
Please don't tease me, oh...oh...

Want me, don't you want me
To touch you and to hold you tight
Don't you want me like I want you
To kiss and love all through the night

Want me, don't you want me
To touch you and to hold you tight
Don't you want me like I want you
To kiss and love all through the night

Want me (Oh, oh), don't you want me (Yeah)
(Don't you want me)

Want me (Oh, oh), don't you want me (Yeah, yeah)
(Don't you want me)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Jody Watley's song Don't You Want Me are about a person who has fallen in love with someone they first laid their eyes on. The singer of the song is head-over-heels in love, but unsure of whether or not the object of their affection reciprocates their feelings. In the first verse, the singer describes their awe at seeing this person and how they melted when this person smiled at them. However, in the next verse, the singer notes a change in the person's behavior and is unsure of whether they are just playing hard to get or genuinely not interested. The singer is honest with their feelings, telling the person that they want them and to touch them and hold them tight.

The chorus repeats the same desire for the object of the singer's affection to want them like they want them. In the second verse, the singer wants to know more than just the person's name and the circumstances around whether they came alone or with someone. The singer's eagerness and curiosity demonstrate that they seriously care about the person and want a deeper connection with them. However, the singer notes that the person seems to be holding back in some way, and they are unsure of their true intentions.

Overall, the lyrics of the song are about desire, uncertainty, and the yearning for a deeper connection with someone. The song's chorus is a plea for the person the singer is interested in to reciprocate their feelings and takes on an almost seductive tone at times.

She's the Blueprint, before Paula, Janet, Beyonce, etc. She had the hair, dresses, the dancing, etc. THE GOAT.. The real music lovers remember her.

Gregory

You just don't see this kind of talent anymore

Christopher Miller

@Gregory She had limited vocal range. She was a pop singer. Nothing more. She was backup with Shalamar for a reason but dance music was about production, not "this kind of talent."

drae Tone

@Christopher Miller "She was a pop singer. Nothing more" meanwhile this is R&B so is most her music. She also clearly had talent and vocal range. "She was backup with Shalamar for a reason" yeah they wanted to form a group, that's called a group. in which most of Shalamar she was also a teen, And During the time of 70's/80's they don't let anyone just singing Soul music it wasn't like today you had to able to sing.

Besides Janet which they kind took off around same time, She sort of did pave for artists of this style, she was one of earliest example of female R&B artists using a lot of dance while targeting a younger audience. During this time was major shift in R&B targeting a younger audience this is sort of in the grey area of Early New Jack swing sound.

And thing about it she actually is fairly successful she won a Grammy for best new artist, and had a few top 10 hot 100 songs. And was very influence in world of fashion. Today most Black female R&B legends are very underrated only a few get the attention now that match the height of there music. So there views don't match how huge they was during the time.
