Three O
Joe Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's three o'clock in the morning
We've danced the whole night through
And daylight soon will be dawning
Just one more waltz with you
That melody so entrancing
Seems to be made for us two
I could just keep on dancing forever dear with you
There goes the three o'clock chime, chiming, rhyming
My heart keeps beating in time
Sounds like an old sweet love tune
Say that there soon will be a honeymoon

It's three o'clock in the morning
We've danced the whole night through
And daylight soon will be dawning
Just one more waltz with you
That melody so entrancing

Seems to be made for us two
I could just keep on dancing forever dear with you

Overall Meaning

Joe's "Three O'Clock In The Morning" is a poignant ode to the beauty of dancing with the one you love in the late hours of the night. The song paints a vivid picture of a couple dancing through the night, captivated by the enchanting melody accompanying them, as the chime marks the passing of time, a symbol of the fact that the night will soon be over. Yet despite the time constraints, the couple dances on with an almost childlike abandon, lost in the moment, and enveloped in the rapture of each other's company, as the singer yearns to keep dancing forever with the object of his affection.

The lyrics communicate the universal theme of the magic of love and the fleeting nature of time. The night may be coming to an end, but the singer is not ready to relinquish the moment, as he shares the dance floor with his beloved. The song perfectly captures the feelings of pleasure, romance, and longing that occur at the end of a night of dancing with one's partner, culminating in the desire to extend the moment, wishing that time would stand still, so the dance could continue.

Great to hear Pete Brown, an altoist with a truly original style.

To Lester Willis Young: I totally agree with both of your comments. Two underrated musicians. Also, Bill Coleman has always been one of my favorite trumpet players.

@Lizzzt I love Joe's tenor saxophone playing on the January 16 1940 date with George Wettling's Chicago Rhythm Kings. It's regrettable that he didn't record more often on that instrument.
