Raised in Velma, Oklahoma, Diffie worked in a foundry while playing local nightclubs in Oklahoma and moved to Nashville in 1986 to work for Gibson Guitar Corporation.
His first album arrived in 1990 when country music was thriving commercially and creatively. His first single, a sensitive traditional country ballad, Home, reached No. 1, although Diffie quickly counted on novelty hits to sustain his career. For instance, his other No. 1 hits are Pickup Man, Bigger Than the Beatles, Third Rock From the Sun and If the Devil Danced (In Empty Pockets). Toward the end of the 1990s, Diffie lost his chart momentum and left Epic Records following his 2001 album, In Another World. Subsequently, he toured with Mark Chesnutt and Tracy Lawrence on the Rockin' Roadhouse tour.
In 2013, Diffie collaborated with Aaron Tippin and Sammy Kershaw on the album All in the Same Boat, and cut the single "Girl Riding Shotgun" with D Thrash of the Jawga Boyz. This was followed in 2019 by a vinyl album called Joe, Joe, Joe Diffie.
Diffie passed away from complications of coronavirus (COVID-19) on March 29, 2020.
Better Off Gone

I'am better of gone....better of gone
I headed my old truck, in to the dawn
I'am better of gone...better of gone
If I'am better of gone
then why am I alone in the dark
If I made the right move
and why can't I convince my heart
When my mind says better leave her alone
You're better of gone
I wonder should I call her on the phone..naw
I'am better of gone....better of gone
surely I can make it on my own
I'am better of gone....better of gone
If I'am better of gone
then why am I alone in the dark
If I made the right move
Then why am I so blue
and why can't I convince my heart
When my mind says better leave her alone
You're better of gone
If I made the right move
Then why am I so blue
and why can't I convince my heart
When my mind says better leave her alone
You're better of gone...better og gone
The lyrics of Joe Diffie's "Better Off Gone" tell a story about a man who has left his significant other and is wondering whether he made the right decision or not. The singer is convincing himself that he is "better off gone" but he cannot seem to let go of his attachment to his former lover. He drives off into the dawn in his "old truck," initially feeling convinced that he has made the right choice. However, the song quickly reveals that his heart is heavy, questioning his decision to leave and struggling with loneliness despite feeling that he should be unattached.
The singer remains conflicted throughout the song, attempting to push away his yearning to reach out to his ex-lover by reminding himself that he is "better off gone." But despite his mind telling him that he is better off alone, his heart is unconvinced, and he remains stuck in a state of emotional limbo. Through the lyrics, Diffie portrays the complex feelings of regret, loss, and longing that can arise when a relationship ends, providing a relatable narrative for those who have experienced the same.
