Girl
Joe Jackson Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Is there anybody gone to listen to my story
All about the girl who came to stay?
She's the kind of girl you want so much, it makes you sorry;
Still, you don't regret a single day
Ah girl! Girl!

She's the kind of girl who puts you down
When friends are there, you feel a fool
Didididi
When you say she's looking good, she acts as if it's understood
She's cool, cool, cool, cool
Girl! Girl! (Was she)

When I think of all the times I've tried to leave her
She will turn to me and start to cry
And she promises the earth to me and I believe her
After all this times I don't know why
Ah, girl! Girl!

She's the kind of girl who puts you down
When friends are there, you feel a fool
When you say she's looking good, she acts as if it's understood
She's cool, cool, cool, cool
Girl! Girl!

Was she told when she was young the fame would lead to pleasure?
Did she understand it when they said
That a man must break his back to earn his day of leisure?

Will she still believe it when he's dead?
Ah girl! Girl! Girl!

Overall Meaning

The song "Girl" by Joe Jackson Trio tells the story of a girl who has a strong hold on the singer despite her putting him down in front of his friends. He describes her as the kind of girl that he wants so much it makes him sorry, but he doesn't regret a single day. The girl sees herself as cool and understands that she has a power over the singer that makes him feel like a fool, yet she promises the world to him if he stays, and he falls for it every time.

The song has a melancholic tone and suggests that the singer is trapped in the relationship with this girl. He has tried to leave many times, but she always convinces him to stay by making promises that she may or may not be able to keep. The singer seems to be aware that something is not right, and wonders if the girl understands the true price of fame and success.

The song is a reflection of the complexities of relationships and how difficult it is to let go of someone that has a hold on us. We make choices that may not be in our best interest, but we do it out of love, fear, or other powerful emotions.

I saw Joe Jackson in NYC about 20 years ago. I was with someone who knew someone and we ended up in a small bar after the show with Joe Jackson and a few others. The place wasn’t crowded; Joe was friendly, easy to approach and we had a decent conversation. He listened to whoever he was speaking with and just hung out until we left. A great guy!

If the Bar was in Soho, we might have crossed paths!
I was in town for the New Music Seminar and I was in SoHo tripping on LSD and Joe Jackson walked by me and into a very small Bar.
Too High to say Hi.
