In the mid-1970s, Venuti performed and recorded, again in the limelight: good examples of his latter-day recordings are the Chiaroscuro CD's Joe Venuti and Zoot Sims (CR(D) 142) and Joe & Zoot & More (CR(D)126). He died in Seattle, Washington.
Venuti was also a legendary practical joker.
Lover Come Back to Me

I let you
We broke the ties that bind
I wanted to forget you
And leave the past behind
Still, the magic of the night I met you
Seems to stay forever in my mind
And high above
The moon was new
And so was love
This eager heart of mine was singing
Lover where can you be
You came at last
Love had its day
That day is past
You've gone away
This aching heart of mine is singing
Lover come back to me
When I remember every little thing
You used to do
I'm so lonely
Every road I walk along
I walk along with you
No wonder I am lonely
The sky is blue
The night is cold
The moon is new
But love is old
And while I'm waiting here
This heart of mine is singing
Lover come back to me
When I remember every little thing
You used to do
I grow lonely
Every road I walk along
I walk along with you
No wonder I am lonely
The sky is blue
The night is cold
The moon is new
But love is old
And while I'm waiting here
This heart of mine is singing
Lover come back to me
The song "Lover Come Back to Me" by Joe Venuti is about a love that has been lost and the longing to have it return. The singer explains that they let their lover go and broke the ties that bound them, but still can't forget the magic of the night they met. They describe the excitement and eagerness they felt when first falling in love, but now they are left with an aching heart and loneliness. They remember every little thing their lover used to do and can't help but feel lonely on every road they walk along without them. Regardless of the passing of time and the changes in the world around them, their heart still sings for their lover to come back.
The lyrics are infused with a sense of yearning and nostalgia, as the singer longs for something that they know they can't have again. They are haunted by the memories of what could have been, and are trapped in a cycle of remembering what once was and hoping for its return. The imagery of the blue sky, new moon, and cold night paint a picture of a world that has moved on, but the heart remains unchanged. It is a melancholic portrayal of lost love that speaks to anyone who has experienced a similar loss.

You went away
You left me
I let you
I didn't stop you from leaving
We broke the ties that bind
We ended our relationship
I wanted to forget you
I wished to erase you from my memory
And leave the past behind
And move on from our relationship
Still, the magic of the night I met you
However, the enchantment of the night we first met
Seems to stay forever in my mind
Is permanently etched in my memory
The sky was blue
The sky had a blue color
And high above
And was at a great height above me
The moon was new
The moon was in the early stage of its phase
And so was love
And so was our love for each other
This eager heart of mine was singing
My heart was overflowing with joy
Lover where can you be
Asking where my lover had gone
You came at last
Finally, you returned
Love had its day
Our love had a time to flourish and be happy
That day is past
But that happy time is over
You've gone away
You left again
This aching heart of mine is singing
My heart is filled with pain
Lover come back to me
Asking my lover to come back to me
When I remember every little thing
When I think back to every small memory
You used to do
Of the things that you used to do
I'm so lonely
I feel extremely alone
Every road I walk along
Every path I take
I walk along with you
I imagine you walking with me
No wonder I am lonely
It's no surprise that I feel so lonely
The night is cold
The temperature of the night is low
But love is old
But our love has been around for a while
And while I'm waiting here
And as I wait here
This heart of mine is singing
My heart is filled with emotion
Lover come back to me
I'm asking my lover to come back to me again
