6 weeks into a difficult introduction, I wanted to write about my experiences.
Our resident is now 14 months, female. We knew we would work a lot in the next year at least, so wanted to get her a friend for a while. We also felt like we had the necessary resources for 2 cats to be happy – a fairly large and catified apartment, 4 grass plants, 3 litter boxes, several scratchers. Given the abundance, and that our resident is so young, we were hoping (expecting) that she would get used to a newcomer fairly quickly.
We were wrong.
We followed the cat introduction steps, set up a basecamp for the kitten boy in our bedroom, and brought him home on a Friday evening.
Our resident didn’t seem alarmed at first. She sniffed his carrier the next day, hanged around in front of the bedroom door loafing, and had no problem eating right in front of the door.
So on Sunday we tried to do the tiniest visual introduction. We were trying to feed them on either side of the bathroom door, which has a one inch gap under it – I think it is for ventillation. We put the bowls quite far from one another. When our resident saw the kitten under the door, violent hissing ensued.
We tried not to despair, and went back a step – did a few days of feeding them on either side of the closed bedroom door (this door shuts tight), with site swapping.
Now I really do feel like we rushed back to trying to feed them together, and we did bungle it at first. (we had to learn to work around the limitations of our home, and the temperament of the cats, so mistakes were bound to happen.)
There were a few scares. One time, our resident didn’t touch her dinner, and that really stressed us out. She also threw up a hairball a few days later – never happened before. The kitten also threw up at some point later. We were alarmed then, but now it seems that these were one-off occurrences.
We did end up with a strict routine, fortified by whatever money can buy. Pheromone diffusers, several more cat toys, expensive treats (our resident is a picky eater, but she seems to like freeze dried chicken hearts, and churus.), more scratchers, one more litter box.
Breakfast and dinner on the two sides of a “baby gate” (a picture frame, with mosquito net stapled to it), and what we call supervised visitations – at 5 o’clock, our resident cat gets treats, while the kitten gets a meal, and then we try to play with them in the same room.
It was possible to distract them from each other, but very hard at first, so visitations were only a few minutes. Our resident would stare at the kitten obsessively, hissed and growled when he got close. Pounced at him, if we didn’t stop her, or separated them in time.
At the same time, the kitten really wanted to go to our cat to play and snuggle, oblivious to the hate and threats.
6 weeks in, they still can’t be in the same room unsupervised, but now they eat without the baby gate, close to one another, and they smelled each other a couple of times nose to nose. Nerve wrecking moments. At this point I can’t tell if they need only days before she accepts him, or another 4 weeks. But we have to be patient.
I’ll update.

My cats got along after 3 days 🥹

Day one : the growling( I gave both cats each other’s toy or I put a little fur beside them so they can smell one another’s fur 🤣it worked )

Day two: the distancing (though they knew of each other they didn’t know each other personally so they kept away from each other the smaller one use to hiss at my older tabby )

Day three: hello friend (I used toys to distract them from each other and after that they were brothers ever since

It went just like that I thought they would not get along but my older tabby didn’t want to fight the new tabby kitten he wanted to sniff him but the smaller one wasn’t having it after he saw me rubbing on the older tabby and seeing the affection and play dates he was okay and I was so relieved 😩they’re cuddled up on the couch as I type this 🤣

Same . My welder cat just jumped the baby gate when we were introducing them visually . By the end of the day of the visual part she jumped to meet the new kitten 🤷‍♀️ And the new kitten was climbing up the gate to go to my cat anyway 😂

They are playing a bit rough and the kitten hissed sometimes rarely when my welder cat was to REALLY play and chases him too abruptly, but my elder girl she also grooms the new kitten and they use each other’s litter boxes and eat from each other bowls , the sleep in the same room/ both in the sofa with us watching telly . Not all the time , they are still adjusting , but we can see it going better and better 🤷‍♀️

After they actually met they still spent the first two nights apart when we couldn’t supervise , and also when we couldn’t be home for a bit they stayed separated . But now they are spending the night just fine .

So I planned a two weeks introduction but need up being a one week one, I mean I don’t think I have to reintroduce them now even if they play. Bit rough ? They do take turns anyway and if it’s too much they would just let the other I’m at know !

I fostered a momma who birthed 5 kittens in a small bedroom. Kittens just got adopted over Thanksgiving. Talk about empty nest. I miss those little buggers. Now I have to intro momma with my 3 resident cats.

@Sandra O how did the introduction go? I hope it went well and no girl fighting (cat fighting🤒) 😄😄

Sandra O

@Jason B Hi Jason. It's slow going cause my momma cat gets nervous but she wants to interact. One of my resident cats is a tortoise shell and gets very upset when they see each other. They have all seen eachother and smelled each others areas. It will work out eventually.

I’m so glad! They really looked like they wanted to be friends but weren’t sure how to do it 😂😂😂 your fur babies are beautiful

Larson Family

Hooray! I have a girl who looks very similar to Ash! She was born feral outside but we trapped her and tamed her as an older kitten and now she’s soooo sweet:)

What do you think helped the most? My cats are in the exact same situation currently. Not sure how to fix it.
