The Final Countdown
Joey Tempest & John Norum Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We're leaving together,
But still it's farewell
And maybe we'll come back,
To earth, who can tell?
I guess there is no one to blame
We're leaving ground
Will things ever be the same again?
It's the final countdown,
We're heading for Venus and still we stand tall
Cause maybe they've seen us and welcome us all

With so many light years to go and things to be found
I'm sure that we'll all miss her so.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to the song The Final Countdown by Joey Tempest & John Norum talks about leaving for a journey into the unknown, leaving behind what we know as our home planet, Earth. The first verse talks about leaving together, but still bidding farewell to Earth, with the possibility of returning always open. It highlights the uncertainty of whether things will ever be the same again or not. The second verse focuses on the journey into space and heading towards the planet Venus. The line "And still we stand tall" portrays the undaunted courage of the space travelers going ahead despite the challenges that await them in the unknown space. The third line of the verse imagines that maybe the inhabitants of Venus have already seen them coming and are eagerly looking forward to welcoming them. The last line is a reminder that there is still much to discover and so much ground to cover.

The chorus of the song, "It's the final countdown," is a powerful metaphor for the ultimate journey that awaits us all - the end of life. It evokes a sense of urgency and the need to make every moment count. It reinforces the purpose of the journey, to discover and explore the unknown territories of space, but also to remind us of the beauty and preciousness of our home planet, which will be missed by all.

Each time they play it, it sounds different and the more and more gorgeous! Not many rock bands can do this live - acousticly - this way!

@bryanwilliams2493

Fabulous version!  Joey's voice is mature, controlled, and passionate...everything a singer should be.  And, what a great acoustic solo from John Norum.  A talented set of under-appreciated musicians during the glam rock era.  Thank you for posting!

@anirbangupta434

Absolutely agree. I'm from India and this song was sort of an anthem here when I grew up in 80s. Its heart warming to see that raw talent again. He says his words absolutely crystal clear.

Oh damn, that was excellent! A bluesy acoustic version of this wonderful classic is all we needed!

@cameliab9993

I can't get enough of this music! Joey is a high class musician!

John Norum - the most underrated player ever.

I actually prefer this version to the metal one. It really shows how amazing his voice is.
