The Dream
John & Audrey Wiggins Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Harley Allen/Clive Westlake)

The plan I never had a lot but I had plans
They took me down the road to where I am
I know now I'd do it all again

The dream was always just a step ahead of me
Too far to touch but close enough to see
There was always somewhere else I had to be
The dream, there's nothing more important than the dream
Without one nothing matters much it seems
It always keeps me goin where the winds of doubts are blowin
What always keeps me goin is the dream

The song it takes too many years to write the song
Where every word is just where it belongs
You wonder why on earth it takes so long
You shine if only for the very shortest time
The latest thing in melody and rhyme
And in the end you'd give up your last dime for

The dream was always just a step ahead of me
Too far to touch but close enough to see
There was always somewhere else I had to be
The dream, there's nothing more important than the dream
Without one nothing matters much it seems
It always keeps me goin where the winds of doubts are blowin
What always keeps me goin is the dream

Oh, it always keeps me goin

When the winds of doubt are blowin
What always keeps me goin is the dream

Overall Meaning

The John & Audrey Wiggins song "The Dream" is a poignant reflection on the importance of holding onto and pursuing one's dreams, even in the face of adversity and doubt. The first verse speaks to the idea that while the singer might not have had a lot in life, they had plans and ambitions for themselves. Though their journey may have taken them down an unexpected road, the singer expresses a willingness to do it all again, which speaks to the power of pursuing one's dreams, despite the obstacles that one may face along the way.

The chorus of the song emphasizes the importance of the dream itself, as the singer expresses that there is nothing more important in their life than that dream. Without a dream to pursue, life may seem lackluster or purposeless. The lyrics suggest that the dream is what keeps the singer motivated and moving forward, even when they encounter doubt or obstacles. The second verse speaks to the process of creating art, comparing the creation of a song to the pursuit of a dream. While the work may take a long time and involve many false starts, the end result is worth it, as it embodies the artist's dream in a tangible way.

Overall, the lyrics of "The Dream" encourage listeners to never give up on their dreams, even when the way forward is not clear or when doubts creep in. The song is a reminder that the pursuit of our ambitions is what gives life meaning and purpose.

I got to see Audrey and John in the parking lot of Mercury Records when I was a song writer in Nashville. I thought they were going to be huge like so many great artists I saw while I was there. Well I am still a huge fan.
