Time Out
John Barry And His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My life goes on in endless song
Above earth's lamentations,
I hear the real, though far-off hymn
That hails a new creation.

Through all the tumult and the strife
I hear it's music ringing,
It sounds an echo in my soul.
How can I keep from singing?

While though the tempest loudly roars,
I hear the truth, it liveth.
And though the darkness 'round me close,
Songs in the night it giveth.

No storm can shake my inmost calm,
While to that rock I'm clinging.
Since love is lord of heaven and earth
How can I keep from singing?
When tyrants tremble in their fear
And hear their death knell ringing,
When friends rejoice both far and near
How can I keep from singing?

In prison cell and dungeon vile
Our thoughts to them are winging,

When friends by shame are undefiled
How can I keep from singing?

Overall Meaning

The song "Time Out" by John Barry And His Orchestra is a reflective piece of music that focuses on the idea of hope and renewal in the midst of tribulations. The opening lines of the song reflect on the endurance of one's life and illustrates how despite the earth's lamentations, there is a far-off hymn that celebrates a new beginning. The song's chorus repeats the question of how someone can prevent themselves from singing despite the trying circumstances. This indicates that the song is about finding solace in something even when circumstances are challenging.

The lyrics reflect on the power of love, which is seen as a force that rules both heaven and earth, and as such, is the embodiment of the ultimate source of hope to carry one through hardship. It's a message of spiritual resilience, suggesting that even during challenging times, one can still find inner peace while clinging to the "rock" of steadfast faith. The song ends with lines that imply that even when surrounded by the darkness of prison, shame, and fear, one can still find joy in celebrating the triumph of goodwill ultimately.

The older you get time goes so quickly but in the last 4/5 years The Persuaders was aired on one of the ITV channels

His sound and compositions represent a period of my life at a time when I didnt fully recognise their importance and beauty; till now.
He puts me back there with memories so rich and warm. Seeing lost friends and family. Seeing surroundings refreshed.
Listening to memories from deep within. The gift of music. His music. Thank you.

He bring those emotions out of many who are drawn to his music. I feel the same way in wishing I could go back with his music as my soundtrack even though some of it was.

Victor, during a rough patch in my sons' lives (four teenagers) I would put Born Free on to rouse them in the morning. Though no one was thrilled at least the day began reasonably. They are fine men in their 60's now. Yes, rich memories.
