Trouble With Classicists
John Cale & Lou Reed/John Cale & Lou Reed Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The trouble with a classicist he looks at a tree
That's all he sees, he paints a tree
The trouble with a classicist he looks at the sky
He doesn't ask why, he just paints a sky

The trouble with an impressionist, he looks at a log
And he doesn't know who he is, standing, staring, at this log
And surrealist memories are too amorphous and proud
While those downtown macho painters are just alcoholic

The trouble with impressionist is
The trouble with impressionist is
The trouble with impressionist is
The trouble with impressionist is
The trouble with personalities, they're too wrapped up in style
It's too personal, they're in love with their own guile
They're like illegal aliens trying to make a buck
They're driving gypsy cabs but they're thinking like a truck

The trouble with personalities is
The trouble with personalities is
The trouble with personalities is
The trouble with personalities is
I like the druggy downtown kids who spray paint walls and trains
I like their lack of training, their primitive technique
I think sometimes it hurts you when you stay too long in school
I think sometimes it hurts you when you're afraid to be called a fool

Overall Meaning

In "Trouble With Classicists," John Cale and Lou Reed critique different artistic approaches and personalities, particularly in the context of the art world. The song highlights the limitations and pitfalls of different styles and attitudes in artistic expression.

The first verse focuses on the classicist, who only sees and paints what is directly in front of them. They lack curiosity and introspection, simply reproducing what is already known and visible. The second verse critiques the impressionist, who loses their identity and individuality when confronted with something ordinary like a log. They become disconnected from themselves and their surroundings.

The song then shifts to criticize the surrealist, suggesting that their abstract and prideful way of remembering things is too ambiguous and self-serving. Meanwhile, the downtown macho painters, known for their excessive drinking, are depicted as lacking depth and relying on stereotypes.

The following verses critique personalities, noting that they are too focused on their own style and image. Their self-absorption and obsession with appearances prevent them from making genuine connections with others. The lyrics contrast personalities with the druggy downtown kids who spray paint walls and trains. These kids, though lacking formal training, are praised for their rawness and lack of inhibitions. The artists imply that sometimes, staying too long in a structured educational system can hinder creativity and authenticity.

Overall, "Trouble With Classicists" suggests that different artistic approaches and personalities have their limitations and can hinder artistic growth and authenticity.

I'm 47 this year and finally after 26 years of excuses I purchased this recording. I'm glad to do so. Simply put there is no better pair suited to play with each other. Glad they had the experience and further more their time with Warhol to share to all of us. Adult rock this is.

[07 April 2021] Always rather startling to hear John Cale (with that Amman Valley accent of his, which he's never lost) singing lyrics that (as far as I could tell [I may be wrong]) Lou Reed wrote, and which are full of the sort of ultra-American locutions that Lou Reed always specialized in. To hear a Welshman singing in Americanese...shocking, shocking.
