'Round Midnight
John Coltrane Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It begins to tell,
'round midnight, midnight.
I do pretty well, till after sundown,
Suppertime I'm feelin' sad;
But it really gets bad,
'round midnight.

Memories always start 'round midnight
Haven't got the heart to stand those memories,
When my heart is still with you,
And ol' midnight knows it, too.
When a quarrel we had needs mending,
Does it mean that our love is ending.
Darlin' I need you, lately I find
You're out of my heart,
And I'm out of my mind.

Let our hearts take wings'
'round midnight, midnight
Let the angels sing,
for your returning.
Till our love is safe and sound.
And old midnight comes around.
Feelin' sad,

really gets bad
Round, Round, Round Midnight

Overall Meaning

The song 'Round Midnight' by John Coltrane is a melancholic jazz number that revolves around the feeling of sadness and heartbreak that overcomes the singer at midnight. The song starts with the lyrics, "It begins to tell, 'round midnight, midnight. I do pretty well, till after sundown, Suppertime I'm feeling sad; But it really gets bad, 'round midnight. " This describes how the singer is mostly able to keep his sadness in check during the day but it takes over him completely at night.

The song further talks about how memories come back to the singer at night, and he can't handle them because his heart still belongs to someone he has lost. The lyrics, "Memories always start 'round midnight, Haven't got the heart to stand those memories, When my heart is still with you, And ol' midnight knows it, too" explain how the singer's heartaches at midnight and he finds it difficult to deal with the thoughts of the person he loves.

The song's final lines, "Let our hearts take wings' 'round midnight, midnight. Let the angels sing, for your returning. Till our love is safe and sound. And old midnight comes around. Feelin' sad, really gets bad, Round, Round, Round Midnight," suggest how the singer wants his love to return and make him happy. The song describes the intense emotions and the pain associated with heartbreak and unrequited love, making it a classic in the jazz genre.

Miles tells a story in his melody like no other jazz musician. It's in the sounds as much as the silences. Coltrane's solo is unmatched in the same way. "Turns" of phrase, pauses and everything is crystal clear, intimately his and yours. I've listened to this track for about 63 years, and I never tire of it.

The fact that younger people love this music as much as those of us who grew up with it gives me hope for the future.  The great stuff never dies......
