Seemed Like a Good Idea
John Farnham Lyrics

Ross Wilson, John Farnham, and Ross Fraser
I've been a fool, I have been cruel
You put your faith in me
Ask myself why, no alibi

Now that you're facing me
Did things my way, I've had my say
Sometimes I crossed that line
But it seemed like a good idea

Seemed like a good idea at the time
I know I was wrong, I'm holding on
Learning is hard to do
It's not too late, if you will wait

I'll make it up to you
If you refuse, then I will lose
I let our life unwind
But it seemed like a good idea

Seemed like a good idea at the time
Seemed like the ring thing
'Til I watched you go
Seemed like the right thing

But I lost control
Out in the darkness I saw a light
And now I know
A bitter taste has taken the place

Of kisses that were so sweet
Open my eyes, I realise
My lesson is complete
If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it

Sometimes I crossed that line
But it seemed like a good idea
Seemed like a good idea at the time
It seemed like a good idea

Seemed like a good idea at the time
Did things my way, I've had my say
Sometimes I crossed the line
But it seemed like a good idea

Seemed like a good idea at the time

Seemed like a good idea
Seemed like a good idea at the time

Overall Meaning

The song "Seemed Like a Good Idea" by John Farnham is about regret after having made mistakes and the desire to make amends. The first verse acknowledges the harm that has been caused by the singer's actions and the disappointment that they feel in themselves. The second verse is an apology and a plea for forgiveness. The chorus asserts that the actions taken that caused harm were done with good intentions and seemed like a good idea at the time, but now they regret and are openly stating this contrition. The third verse is a reflection on what has been learned from the experience and how important it is to not fix what is not broken.

The song showcases the remorse people feel after making mistakes and how difficult it can be to make up for those errors. The lyrics are emotionally charged and express the guilt and shame experienced by the singer. It also highlights how sometimes, even with good intentions, things can go wrong and one can lose control over the situation. The song encourages taking responsibility for one's actions and accepting the consequences of those actions, while also expressing hope for redemption and forgiveness.

John Farnham, great singer and good guy! I know someone who worked at EMI in the 80s, he said John Farnham treated everyone there the same, from the cleaner to the GM.

John is such a gem. Listeni to his speaking voice and you would never know just how powerful his voice is, and just how big his vocal range is. . I've just been so lucky - no cd or dvd in production for sale in UK at the moment, but local secondhand record shop had this cd. It looks unplayrd, the case and lyrics sheets inside look untouched. I'm a total Farnsy fan, all his music takes me to a happy place. Happy Christmas and happy life to you all. 16.12.23. UK. E❤

@flatoutt1

one reason why i love john and his music so much is because he just nails it . he's showing us how life is to be fully lived by having fun with your friends ,doing what you love and having a laugh (allow them to love you and receive it and while you do the same to them; makes everybody feel good) .[and not to take yourself toooo seriously and despite what shit you're going through there's always time for a bit of balance with celebrating life; incredible wisdom in this clip] he majors on the majors .that's what makes this an absolute priceless treasure to invite us into this energy/atmosphere

@Friendship1nmillion

He's a { 💯×💯 ) better man than me , in whatever life's stage we're both at . He's been my inspiration to ( attempt ) become a better person . I can't ever live up to his standard . His voice is equivalent to NOONE else ( except maybe Shannon Noll ) . He's got a devilish sense of humour that's a treat like heaven, and when he dies , the world will be forever lost from a wonderful, overachieving human being . ♑️✍️🇸🇯🇦🇺
