Don't You Wish It Was True
John Fogerty Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I dreamed I walked in heaven, just the other night
There was so much beauty, so much light
Don't you wish it was true
Don't you wish it was true

An angel took my hand
Said you don't have to hurry
Got all the time in the world, don't worry
Don't you wish it was true
Lord, don't you wish it was true

But if tomorrow everybody was your friend
Anyone could take you in
No matter what or where you been
But if tomorrow everybody had enough
The world wasn't quite so rough
Lord, don't you wish it was true

He said the world gonna change and it starting today
There will be no more armies, no more hate
Don't you wish it was true
Don't you wish it was true

And all the little children, will live happily
There'll be singing and laughter, sweet harmony
Don't you wish it was true
Lord, don't you wish it was true

But if tomorrow, everybody under the sun
Was happy just to live as one
No borders, no battles to be won
But if tomorrow everybody was your friend
Happiness would never end
Lord, don't you wish it was true

But if tomorrow, everybody under the sun
Was happy just to live as one
No borders, no battles to be won
But if tomorrow everybody was your friend
Happiness would never end
Lord, don't you wish it was true
Lord, don't you wish it was true

What a beautiful day

Overall Meaning

This song is full of hope and longing for a better world. The first verse describes the dream of walking in heaven, where there is so much beauty and light. The second verse describes an angel taking the singer's hand and promising that there is no need to rush, since there is all the time in the world. The third verse imagines a world where everyone is friendly and hospitable, where there is no need for borders, armies, or battles. The fourth verse is a repeat of the third, with allusion to the children living in a harmonious world. The chorus repeats the question, "Don't you wish it was true?" and the final verse envisions a world where there is no division or conflict and happiness is infinite.

The song can be interpreted to be about heaven, a utopian society, or a wishful fantasy of a better world. It is a protest song that exposes the flaws of our current world and calls on us to change it. The song has an optimistic tone, as it suggests that change is possible and can start today.

That's so sweet! You know John, you have a big part in the reason for why I started playing guitar. That "I put a spell on you" solo sent fire through my bones the first time I heard it when I was about 6 years old. I will always remember that. Thank you.

The legend John Fogerty just kickin back, playing great music with his kids and passing his talent on down to them. I think Don't You Wish It Was True is by far one of the best songs John Fogerty has ever written. Thank you for all the great music since the 1960's John!!
