It Ain
John Fogerty Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There go your big black Limousine
You're shakin' your booty for the magazine
Pickin' and posin' like a wannabe
It ain't right, it ain't right, such a waste of life

Maybe you forgot how we live down here
People work hard for their money, dear
You had such a hard day lookin' at the mirror
It ain't right, it ain't right, honey, such a waste of life

Another long weekend with your friend
I thought that party would never end
Well up to your rehab and gone again
It ain't right, it ain't right, honey, such a waste of life

Bop, bop, bop, bop, bop, yeah

There go your big black Limousine

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to John Fogerty's song "It Ain't Right" are a scathing critique of a materialistic and shallow individual who is a part of the elite class. The opening line refers to the person's luxury car, a big black limousine, which is a symbol of their privileged status. The second line describes the person's attempt to gain attention and fame by posing for a magazine, but their efforts come across as desperate and insincere, as indicated by the phrase "wannabe". The chorus states that such a life is a waste and that it is not right for someone to be so self-absorbed and lacking in empathy for others.

The second verse is even more critical, stating that the person has forgotten how most people live, that is they work hard for their money. The phrase "lookin' at the mirror" is a reference to the person's excessive vanity, and the accusation that they have forgotten how others live is a serious one. The third verse describes the person's empty social life, with long weekends spent partying with friends and checking into rehab. The phrase "gone again" suggests that this is a repeated cycle of behavior that offers no lasting fulfillment, and the chorus repeats the sentiment that such a life is a waste. The use of the word "honey" throughout the song is a sarcastic and dismissive way of addressing the person, emphasizing the gap between their shallow existence and the real problems faced by most people.

This is John Fogerty playing every instrument & singing all the parts, including back-up singing, too! John Fogerty is The Blue Ridge Rangers. John plays 20 instruments or so to make this album. The reason he called himself “The Blue Ridge Rangers is, not long after the break-up of his beloved band “Creedence Clearwater Revival” he didn’t want to cash I on the Creedence name & so his one man band could be accepted on its own merits! I believe he accomplished this. That is integrity, folks!👍
