Fortunate Son
John Fogerty Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Some folks are born
Made to wave the flag,
Oh, they're red, whit and blue.
And when the band plays "Hail to the chief",
They point the cannon right at you.

It ain't me,
It ain't me.
I ain't no senator's son.
It ain't me,
It ain't me.
I ain't no fortunate one.

Some folks are born
Silver spoon in hand,
Lord don't they help themselves.
But when the tax man comes to the door,
Lord, the house looks like a rummage sale.

It ain't me,
It ain't me.
I ain't no millionaire's son.
It ain't me,
It ain't me.
I ain't no fortunate one.

Some folks inherit
Star spangled eyes,
Ooh, they send you down to war.
And when you ask them,
"How much should we give?"
They only answer "More! More! More!"

It ain't me,
It ain't me.
I ain't no military son.
It ain't me,
It ain't me.
I ain't no fortunate one.

It ain't me,

It ain't me.
I ain't no Fortunate Son.

Overall Meaning

John Fogerty's song "Fortunate Son" is a protest against the Vietnam War and how the wealthy and powerful were able to avoid serving or facing the consequences of the war while the less fortunate were forced to fight and die. The song begins by describing those who are born into privilege, waving the flag and pointing the cannon when the "Hail to the Chief" is played. The refrain "It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no senator's son, it ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate one" emphasizes the message that these lucky few are not representative of the majority who do not have the same advantages.

The second verse continues the theme, with those born with a "silver spoon in hand" who don't help themselves but expect others to pick up the tab with regards to taxes. The tax man coming to the door and the house looking like a rummage sale show the extent to which these privileged individuals are willing to avoid paying their fair share. The final verse refers to those who inherit "Star spangled eyes" and advocate for war, but do not face the consequences of their actions. The mocking response of "More! More! More!" highlights their callousness towards those who are actually fighting and dying in the conflict.

@stevemarino5745

Oh shoot, fast, slow, what does it matter? It's one of the best, of not THE best American anti war songs ever written, and John sang it from the heart, w/ enough energy to blow up the place. I loved it. No one living other than Fogerty can cover that song.

@johnoldsnake4132

Oh, it's the best anti-'Nam song of all time for certain.

My favorite song

@MrLore68

@johnoldsnake4 yes, and that makes me wonder, how come there were so many "anti-'nam" song at that time, compared with the near-zero anti-iraq or anti-afghanistan song at recent past time?
