Who
John Fogerty Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Long as I remember
The rain been comin' down.
Clouds of myst'ry pourin'
Confusion on the ground.
Good men through the ages,
Tryin' to find the sun;
And I wonder,
Still I wonder,
Who'll stop the rain.

I went down Virginia,
Seekin' shelter from the storm.
Caught up in the fable,
I watched the tower grow.
Five year plans and new deals,
Wrapped in golden chains.
And I wonder,
Still I wonder
Who'll stop the rain.

Heard the singers playin',
How we cheered for more.
The crowd had rushed together,
Tryin' to keep warm.
Still the rain kept pourin',
Fallin' on my ears.
And I wonder,

Still I wonder
Who'll stop the rain.

Overall Meaning

John Fogerty’s “Who'll Stop the Rain” is about humanity’s perpetual search for hope and stability amid chaos and confusion. The song begins with an observation that rain has been falling for as long as anyone can remember, and that it seems to stir up a lot of confusion and mystery. The theme of searching for something that may be beyond our reach is introduced in the next couple of lines, where good men throughout history are described as trying to find the sun. The lyrics suggest that the rain is a metaphor for the many problems and troubles that people face in their quest for meaning and purpose in life.

The final verse in the song brings the theme of hopelessness and desperation to the forefront. Fogerty sings about attending a concert, where the crowd had gathered for warmth and to hear the music. Despite the festive atmosphere, the rain continued to pour down, making it difficult for the musicians and fans to enjoy the event. The refrain – “Who’ll Stop the Rain” – becomes a plea for someone to bring an end to the chaos and confusion, and to provide some sort of light or guidance that can help people navigate the stormy waters of life.

In summary, “Who'll Stop the Rain” is a powerful and poignant song about the human struggle for purpose and hope in a world that can often seem dark and foreboding.

Great song, great story, and that is a beautiful guitar you are playing there.

The kids playing with you sort of looked like they were thinking “wonder when grandpas gonna get to the song?”

Sort of the way all the younguns look at me when I get to telling stories.

Don’t stop telling stories.

Best part of it (well not quite as good as the song but pretty good)

I wonder if any of the kids are performing professionally?

I can only guess these are his kids... He has toured with Shane and Tyler before the two men in video.

This music will never get old. I remember listening to it in 1969, I was 10 years old. The older boys on our school bus was always talking about music, CCR, The Rolling Stones, Jimmie Hendrix and many more. What a Great time for music.
