John Fogerty Lyrics

(omitting the background "chorus")

I'm workin' on a building, I'm workin' on a building,
I'm workin' on a building, for my Lord, for my Lord.

If IIIIIIIIIIIIII were a drunkard, tell you what I'd do,
I'd quit my drinkin', and work on a building too.
CHORUS:
I'm workin' on a building, I'm workin' on a building,
I'm workin' on a building, for my Lord, for my Lord.
It'a a Holy Ghost building, It'a a Holy Ghost building,
It'a a Holy Ghost building, for my Lord, for my Lord.

If IIIIIIIIIIIIII were a gambler, tell you what I'd do,
I'd quit my gamblin', and I'd work on a building too.

CHORUS

If IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII were a preacher, tell you what I'd do,
I'd keep on preachin', and I'd work on a building too.

CHORUS

Overall Meaning

John Fogerty's song "Workin' on a Building" is a gospel hymn that speaks of the importance of working for the Lord. The repetition of "I'm workin' on a building for my Lord" reinforces the message that one's actions and work are a testament to their faith. The song references three different vices: drinking, gambling, and preaching for money. Fogerty points out that even those who are caught up in these behaviors can still redirect their efforts towards building a "Holy Ghost building" and serving God.

The lyrics also suggest a sense of community and collaboration. The phrase "I'm workin' on a building" implies that many people are involved in the project, each one contributing to the larger goal. The repetition of the chorus throughout the song reinforces this sense of community and unity, as everyone works together towards a common goal.

Overall, the message of the song is one of redemption and commitment to the Lord. By emphasizing the importance of hard work and a willingness to change one's attitudes and behaviors, Fogerty encourages listeners to actively participate in building a better world, both physically and spiritually.
