You Got The Magic
John Fogerty Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Mmmm, when the midnight ravens appear in your eyes,
Oh! and the mystery holdin' your soul is realized,
Shadows of night, faces in the fire, like visions in a dream, takin' me higher.

Chorus:
You got the magic thrillin' me, you got the magic chillin' me,
You got the magic, shine your spell on me.
Whoa, when the hoodoo children of night gather near,
Ah! when the whirlwind whispers your name, I can hear,
Wind in the willows, scratchin' in the sand,
And the whole universe is at your command there.

Chorus
Yeah.

You got the magic thrillin' me, you got the magic chillin' me, oooh!
You got the magic thrillin' me, you got the magic chillin' me, oooh!
You got the magic, shine your spell on me.

Overall Meaning

In John Fogerty's song "You Got The Magic", the lyrics portray a sense of fascination and enchantment towards a mysterious individual who possesses an indescribable power over the singer. The song begins with a description of the person's eyes and how they seem to hold a mystery within them. The metaphor of "midnight ravens" adds to the secretive and alluring element of this person's presence. As the song progresses, there are mentions of "hoodoo children of night" and "whirlwind whispers" that seem to imply that this person has a supernatural quality to them.

The chorus emphasizes the hold this person has on the singer - their magic is both thrilling and chilling. The repetition of the phrase "you got the magic" reinforces the idea that this person has an intangible quality that is hard to describe but impossible to ignore. The second verse continues with imagery of the natural world (wind in the willows, scratching in the sand) to emphasize the idea that this person has control over the entire universe, further cementing their power.

Overall, the song is a testament to the power of attraction and the allure of the unknown. The person being sung about seems to have an almost supernatural quality that draws the singer in, and the lyrics reflect that sense of fascination and enchantment.

This song and the rest of the album are pretty good, despite what a lot of people are saying. I'm safe to assume he was heavily pressured by perfection and record label control at the time.

Song went to # 87 (Billboard Hot 100) in May of 1976. Released on Asylum Records not Fantasy.

Oooo man I was on board with this right up until the chorus. Thought for a moment John was being too hard on himself but, nope. He was right.

Bucky Dornster

Had Fogerty recorded this with a top-level producer such as Bill Szymczyk, this would have rocked.

This Song Is Awesome And John Should’ve Worked On Hoodoo More and Changed The Chorus Of This Song

Good gawd. I just finished reading Fogerty's bio where he mentions this song and...now I know why he doesn't want to remember it.

David Kirkham

John was trying to re-invent himself around this time in his career! He was trying to distance himself from his awesome songs he wrote while leading Creedence Clearwater Revival because of contract problems with Fantasy records!

Bucky Dornster

@David Kirkham It needed a collaborative touch with a good producer.
